State Farm is doing what all companies do, maximizing profit. It is not inherently evil, it is what companies do in a capitalistic economic situation. What you can do as an employee to prepare is this:
-
Figure out what debt you have and start paying down as much as possible by highest interest rate or lowest balance.
-
Build up your credit lines. Credit cards, lines of credit; etc.
-
Update your resume, have it looked at by people who specialize in it.
-
Buy beer and whiskey, you’re going to need to get f---ed up (first with your soon to be ex-coworkers and then alone in the shower).
-
Stock up on movies, preferably x rated ones because you’re going to have “a lot of time on your hands.”
-
Practice your interview skills.
-
Network. Network. Network.
-
Don’t be ashamed, this was something that was done to you, not by you.
-
Be patient, finding a new career takes time.
-
Support companies that support you.
