Make a list in random order of the ten most important things in your life....the 10 things you hold most dear. Now, begin crossing them off your list as your decide which you would sacrifice next so you could continue to move forward with your life. I know it's kind of an exercise of sacrifice kind of like they depicted in the movie "Sophie's Choice", but it's worth the effort. When you finally cross off the ninth of your 10 items, look at your last remaining thing that you ultimately treasure and I'll wager that not a one of you still have Wal-Mart as the last item standing on your list.
I won't sugar coat it. If you get cut and lose your job it s---s. A lot. But all the people who loved you yesterday still love you. All of your marketable skills still remain. You still have your (slightly damaged) pride. Those with degrees still still possess that achievement. All the folks you worked with who respected you still respect you. And if your walked out the door with your head held high their respect for you has been amplified.
Take a deep breath, and if you imbibe allow yourself a stiff one (or two!). Relax. Be easy on yourself. Take a week and go through all of the stages of acceptance. And then move on. You took the hit and survived and are now on the other side.
One year from now, when all those who remain again stare into the abyss of the unknown you will have already moved on with your life.
Good luck to all on both sides of the abyss.
