Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

March 2018 Layoffs

Cliff notes of my day.....

My leadership shared 19 role/skill combos that are overstaffed.

Options for impacted are reskilled or reductions.

SF exec shared SF isnt paying for reskilling!!!

My team is made up of overstaffed and understaffed roles.

Sounds like analyst reductions are likely coming in March

Here is my summary of the feelings at Corporate.

  1. What was once a career is now a job.

  2. Moral is crushingly low, trust in executives is gone (though faked in Farrington Forums, ET briefings, etc.)

  3. The 5400 analysts who completed the I&I form are somewhat in disbelief that a career spanning yrs or decades can be decided with a brief survey that provides an incomplete view of an employee and the value they bring to the organization.

  4. The vision of the organization is poorly understood. Unless the vision is to slash jobs to save money without really having a plan.

  5. Interactions between impacted areas and non impacted areas is akward. I hear alot of "your great, you'll be fine" from people who are not impacted and still think they work for the same SF that isn't changing.

  6. Transformation fatigue has set in. The amount of employees considering leaving the company increases every day. The "Why should I continue to let the company stress me like this" crowd is growing.

  7. People are focusing on building their resumes with new skills. Not caring if they are used by SF or somewhere else.

  8. The rollout of impacted areas just feels like a non-stop barrage of artillery. Monday is Ad Services, Wednesday is claims, Thursday is an announcement that didn't really explain sh--.....and the next week it repeats. Absolute moral and motivation busting approach is being used.

  9. Long lunches, "WFH", walks around the building for hours, resume building classes, etc are the becoming norms. Instead of focusing on work.

  10. Last I would say is that Corp employees feel slightly less screwed than areas outside Corp and the hubs. But it's hard to express that support when your trying to keep your head above water yourself.

(215 ILCS 5/Art. III heading) I. DOMESTIC MUTUAL COMPANIES (Article scheduled to be repealed on January 1, 2027)

There will be no Mutual Fund companies allowed after 2027 something Ed Rust wanted years ago.

I had a job offer during the last re-org 2 years ago, but gained insight during an MG4 LDA that re-orgs...layoffs were going to be somewhat commonplace moving forward. I was fortunate to have an opportunity with another insurer knock on my door. I’ve never looked back, and am grateful for my certain future. My advice is to find something else/somewhere else that values you, and what you do. Good luck to you all!

Today, L&D professional level received word that they’ll get voluntary severance. End date for them is August 31st unless they were offered another position at corporate or a HUB

Are there really over areas to move to? I thought no areas were allowing IT to move over. But this is what Tribune says:

“They can also apply to other departments … if they do not want to leave Bloomington,” Dundov said. “It’s just their skill set in the IT area, those jobs are going elsewhere.”

This seems overstated to make SF look better. How many open jobs are there really in other departments in Bn? And since SF isn't paying for reskilling is that what the forms are for? To make it easy for SF to know who can take a different job and move to another area? Just doesn't seem like there are a whole lot of other jobs in other areas to move anyone to since they only noted open Claims jobs in BN or moving to a hub...

Folks unfortunately voluntary severance is reserved mostly for upper leadership. Think MG3 and above. Remember some MG3 are Section Managers. Systems employees will get involuntary severance if they r not chosen. Real question is will they pay relocation for those who get a job that has moved to hub. My thinking is yes, if you are chosen through the initial process and your job is in a Hub. I'm still hopeful for systems at least that this won't be a total blood bath. I just can't believe that it will be. I am hoping for the best for Systems folks and the town of Bloomington.

How certain is this?

Very. We've already been given the list of roles that will be cut. What they haven't told us is how many will be cut and what the conditions will be. There is a meeting on the calendar for early next week that has all the hallmarks of being another of the infamous "You're About to be Terminated" meetings. We will find out then.

3000 being cut in certain segments across the enterprise. They say the only severance is involuntary, but appears there may be discrimination with this group as there is no voluntary severance offered. If they offer voluntary severance to other segments, why does this segment not have the same opportunity to have voluntary severance. Tipsord would sure feel he was not being treated fairly if he wasn’t given the same severance packages as other segments!! Think about it Tipsord!! State Farm sure has changed. Maybe the Board of Directors needs to make a change before he flies State Farm in the ground!!!

Tipsord is such an awful person. He told managers that State Farm comes before his family.....i would hate how he treats his family, as he doesn't care about employees or policy holders! Its so bad, sad.... Satan has taken over.

Sigh. I keep hearing the 1200 number too in Bloomington. Have not heard 3200 total. But 1200 in Bloomington is a lot. And a reduction of 3500 total is huge. Wow.

You are vested after 5 years of employment. Total time. It does not have to be consecutive.

I heard 1600 in Corp South. I've also heard 3200 across all three hubs and BLM.

Like most everyone else, I have no idea if these numbers are legit. I expect those of us still here in March will find out then.

So far, much of the speculation has turned out to be based in truth. So we will see.

We can get rid of test analyst - test specialist and test design because they are paid as much as developers, but 95% don't know how to code. Test Automation developers should turn into regular developers and the development team should factor in automation into their stories.

As far as data analysts go, I think there are many with that title that aren't actually qualified and not enough work for them.

Is it just me or is almost every BA we have on this list? I also don't understand why we think we can do away with data analyst and test folks. Sigh okay u get ISD was a mistake but my goodness this is harsh.

One thing that kills me about this role list is that the executives totally FUBAR'd these roles during the last big-reorg. And now that the roles s--- (because they MADE them s---), they've decided they no longer need the roles at all.

As another poster said in another thread: "it's sort of like if the executives chopped off your arms and legs and then decided to fire you because you could't move."

BA is a perfect example. Before CDE/ICP, I worked with really great business analysts. But with CDE, they decided to create ISD, and in the process robbed projects of real business analysis. But projects still NEED business analysis.

We don't need ISD. I get that. But we do need business analysis.

The same thing happened with planners and project managers -- the last re-org neutered those roles to the point that all the really good ones left the company.

I just feel like the executives have no clue how badly they f---ed everything up with the last re-org and they've adopted a scorched earth policy to make sure the rest of Systems goes up in flames too.

Many of these roles could pretty easily reskill to a scrum master, which is understaffed. I believe that's considered a 'safe' skill change

Thanks for the role list. ALL in the ISD rolr should go, they never should have created that useless role. I work in systems. I watch my systems BA run rings around them every day. There are six of them watching for every systems BA doing work

Agreed with the last post. If I hear one more person in leadership tell me how much they care..... or see another email from Tipsord....

by

Post ID: @1vgy+Rq1MtO6

I would really prefer leadership to stop saying they care about us. If they did, they would have taken the time to keep some of the best performers that they are now throwing out into the street. Granted, those people will find jobs and probably better than State Farm, but still a huge disruption. Also, it leaves them with the dregs to run everything. Or the ones who cannot move. They also need to stop saying they know how we feel. Because they have no idea. They should all be fired. They are the ones who got the company Into this mess that even a clerical staff member could’ve told you was nuts. So my message to leadership is shut up and tell us who is being fired and save us the garbage about how much you care. Because again if you did you would retool the best of your workforce if you needed to and you are not the least bit interested in that.

The video they put out said business analysts/IT analysts. IT analyst is the new name for scrum masters, and business anslysts both ISD and systems.
