Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Are Walmart stores eliminating jewelry departments?

Please let me know what you think or what you know. I hear rumors in my store but I simply cannot believe it. Given all the changes, closures and layoffs nothings should surprise me but I'd hate to lose my job right now - I need money.

I know the site is about layoffs and this is my first post here - please excuse me if I posted a question that does not belong here.

I was at the walmart in my town yesterday and thr lady at the jewelry counter was telling me that in April 2020 all walmarts are getting rid of the jewelry. She said it's too big of a loss since everyone steals it ($10,000+)

I noticed the Iron Mountain, MI store had the Jewelry Dept. ripped out, along with the Household Furniture Dept.

I called up some local LI NY Target and Walmart stores the past two days here (July 9 2019),

and I was told that the main local Walmart in East Meadow, NY, has no more jewelry or watch

dept, it has been totally phased out, gone goodbye, and Target in Westbury LI, a major location,

also has no more Casio watches or jewelry dept., or at least, they don't sell watches anymore.

This is frightening. Yes I can get things online, no big deal, but what if I want a gift for someone,

impromptu, and wrap it myself and do a personal touch, I don't even have any option besides

online now. That's b---s---. I can't even go to my local Target and buy a cheap summer digital

watch to knock around in? What stupidity. I'm assuming Walmart and Target will be next

to go Chapter 11 soon. Or, in the next four years at least. Nice f---ing marketing strategy.

Why should I even venture into Walmart or Target, if they don't have stuff in stock,

and don't have the merchandise I want? I was tempted to call up Casio USA Corporate HQ in NJ and

ask the sales guys what they think of this trend. They cannot be happy about it.

There's now no local retailer that even sells Casio GShock watches and things like that,

except Macys' which is also on the way out, and has no stock, and sells everything for top dollar

or more! So I wouldn't ever go there anyway. Also, last time I tried to, Macys had no sales

staff old ladies in the Casio watch dept.!! So I couldn't even buy one, because there was nobody

to even f---ing help me! I laughed right out of the store, and bought a watch on Amazon.

And everyone wonders why the web has kicked their retail asses. So lame. So inept. So dumb.

So stupid. So r----ded. So blinkered.

Another corporate blunder like sears

Jewelry is a seasonal purchase holiday

Shopping or special event

Wear can you buy a Casio g shock watch now

So Walmart only wants to sell every day items and consumables

And then complain holiday sales are flat

Update: I spoke with my friend who is the jewelry associate and she says she did hear (from someone at another store) that jewelry is being phased out and will eventually include all Walmart stores. She is worried about losing her job but she was told she will be considered an apparel/fitting room/shoes associate if jewelry goes away. Hope everything goes well if WM does follow through and get rid of their jewelry departments.

Wow all the regular customers will be very disappointed. I am an apparel associate and I help out in jewelry as needed. I wonder if changing watch batteries will go away as well? Not a bad thing since I am the only associate in my department willing to help out in jewelry. It will take a load off of me if the supervisor and regular jewelry associate (yes, we only have 1 associate who is actually a jewelry associate) are off and I have to cover. While I like working in jewelry, I don't like the fact that they don't enforce cross training in our department so the load doesn't always fall on one person, especially on weekends and holidays! I like happy customers, not angry ones who think they are not getting service. I personally haven't heard any talk of my store getting rid of fine jewelry, but then again communication in our store is close to nonexistent. I find out what's going on at Walmart online on sites like these. =D

I visited a Walmart in Waterford, CT recently and they do not have a Jewelry department anymore. I asked an associate and he said everything went on clearance until it was all gone.

Our store is downsizing next month. We got a look at the blueprints and they are reducing us form a 10 showcase store to a 6... however they are expanding the costume jewelry. There is another store 15 miles to the north of us that is in the middle of their remodel and sadly, they will be eliminating their showcase merchandise altogether. I hope that these changes do not effect our long term and loyal customers and make us lose market share. Hoping for the best.

I heard that it is strongly being considered. Currently there has been two proposals that I know of. 1 a reduced locked fine jewelry option much like what Sam's club has, and the other option is to get rid of the Fine Jewelry cases all together, leaving Costume Jewelry and watches, but only on the side counter. For wha it's worth...

It will be moved online.

Stores are preparing for scan and go. This is the worse time to work for Walmart. Good luck!

How will rednecks get engaged now?

Keep your head up. There are other things that you can do within the store if they eliminate jewelry. Good luck and look at other open positions, and make sure your store manager knows your interest.
