Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

Targeting those in the 45-55 age group

They are targeting anyone in the 45-55 age group, 8 or more years employed is what I'm seeing.

This is so true. People, please be prepared. I keep talking to people who believe they are safe because they have been here for a long time and they don't believe it can happen to them. They think they are too valuable. Talk about keeping your head firmly buried in the sand. The longer you've been with State Farm, the more danger you are in.

They told us five years ago when they announced the offices making the cut at that time, that our office was staying for now but was the most “experienced” I.e. oldest employees and it was a large financial liability for the company. Also, that we were all a concern and a target. Ever since then the pressure has been on, it has been a huge social-economic-psychologically experiment to see how hard they could lean on, pile on top of the “experienced” employees before they would retire (early), quit, or get ill and eventually leave or be targeted and terminated when they returned. If you used your leave benefits you were up on deck when you returned. This has been a long game with lots of souls left along the way since 2012/2013 across the country. We are in final stages of this inning with more to come. Glad I am out and can leave the dugout. Going to find new neighbors.

Hope those involved who have violated discrimination laws are held accountable.

I'm surprised too there has not been any class action suit for age discrimination.

Success, comoetence, and ambition have now become huge liabilities. The more successful you have been at the Farm, the harder the leadership works to purge you from the ranks and hire a cheaper replacement. Service is now so bad I never voluntarily reveal who I work for. Claim service is so abysmal 900,000 customers voted with their dollars and dumped us just last year. I would not insure my mailbox with State Farm.

Reducing expense by eliminating higher salaried workers.

The goal appears to be more about getting rid of everyone with experience/knowledge, which tends to be those who have been around longer and are older. My take is that they want to get rid of everyone that might be able to say 'I remember when SF was a great place to work.' The quality of the employee and years of service seems to have no bearing on the decisions. Messages come from scripted videos that have been heavily vetted by the lawyers. When it came to 1st line manager assignments, they made a point of assigning them to areas where they had no expertise or experience. And, yes, they dumped a lot of them both good and bad and are now getting ready to hire people for the remaining positions.

Oh so true!! My fire manager is ruthless and has had 3 long time employees quit under her, one of them walked out. Then there's one after some months under her retired at 62 . And another one under her for some months was fired. Yet with all the reorg in fire company she's moving forward while the other 2 much more experienced fire managers still are in limbo. It's easy they sent cut throat like her!!!

Why is no one contacting lawyers. It sure looks like blatant age discrimination to me. You would think a lawyer would love to get his/her hands on case like this against a Fortune 500 company.

I left last year. I was a fire field claim rep for 20 years and 54 years old. I was sick of the constant stress about having a job. They are currently eliminating 1/2 of the fire field reps in my area. 3 are women my age with similar tenure. Coincidence? I think not. The Farm has become heartless and ruthless.

Yep. Definitely age discrimination. Watching excellent manager not given a job offer, and now there’s a posting for that position. 53 years old
