GE Salem layoff for March 2, 2018

As a hourly employee that will be laid off in 2 week it is really hard to think that a big company like GE would be going to something like this that would affect many people in the workforce all over. I mean really this is happening to us. People need there jobs to live and provide for there family and to have something to look on to be proud of and somewhat feel security in the job force. Why do we have upper management that cant keep a big company like GE to run efficient enough to not have to always layoff good people that appreciate there jobs. Big companies like GE and others need to learn how to manage and stay in there financial means just like us the small little workers have to. You here rumors that the large bonuses giving out to corporate in amounts of millions just don't make any sense and has been going on for years. I mean if you want to reward and recognize peer's for doing a good job fine, but keep it realistic . No one needs millions and millions of dollar to just be giving away. All the profit that GE has made over the decades you would think that when times get rough that you can still sustain with your current workforce staff without job cuts all the time. I guess when you are buying other mega companies, it somehow gets away with the tracking of the spending which eventually catches up with us. In return hurts the small time hourly worker that is trying to survive and maybe have a little something in life. Now we have a new CEO that is stuck trying to make thing good again for GE by doing things that is hard and will affect others down the road because of poor prior leadership, which definitely failed and loss site of the vision of the company. Its sad to hear all the rumor about our great company. People in fear of there pension may not be as well protected as it should. Well you all seen all the rumors so it speaks for itself i guess. In closing i will definitely miss being a part of the GE and being with my union brothers and sisters. My short time here at GE was really wonderful at the plant in Salem Va and i don't have no regret, just wish i could had been there a little bit longer. Thanks to all for listening.

We just got our 12 month notice. GE Salem is closing. I have no faith in the Union negotiating any thing other than total shutdown, We were told all our work is going to India. Think I'll try for a job at 7-11 or Dunkin Donuts. Then they can feel what it's like.

Sorry about your job loss. I have been worried about friends who work at that facility. Will the Salem plant remain open?

I think the one who added this comment "how's about after ya get laid off you get some schoolin. yer grammar and punkuashin is atrocious." also needs some education.

While I sympathise with the OP and him facing losing his job, I am puzzled in general by the very socialist sounding Americans on here. After all we are told time and time again that the US capitalist system is what made them great.

It’s so easy to blame the little guy, and especially a unionized workforce. Wrong, but easy. It lets the execs take ALL the credit when times are good, and none of the blame when times are tough. It’s a common tactic, but in the end you all succeed or fail together. I am truly sorry to hear that GE is struggling, and especially sorry to hear that the Salem plant is at death’s door.

Companies are in business to make profit not to employ people. If GE could do business with no employees, trust me they would. Every employee represents nothing but massive expense and liability.

GE has definitely been severely mismanaged for years by its executives...... and abused by a generally militant and spoiled union workforce that takes as much as possible while adding as little value as possible.

GE is very unlikely to receive bailout money under the Trump Administration, since GE has been closely aligned with the big government/subsidized crony capitalist system they had under the Obama Admin. and the Dems agenda for quite some time; (high speed trains, CFL light bulbs, wind and solar power being prime examples). In fact, when JI % JF realized they were not going to be the recipients of government largesse, they used Trumps "Charlottesville response" as their reason for leading the charge for executives to abandon Trumps Manufacturing Council. Typical PC posturing that has taken the place of true executive leadership in todays corporate America. Was told years ago by an older sr. employee, ' GE does not consider itself an American Co., it considers itself to be a worldwide conglomerate that happens to be based in North America in the United States'. The 42 layoffs at Salem are only the beginning.

Don’t feel bad who ever posted this I am sure GE will be going bankrupt soon. Then the government will give GE some bailout money. Then all the corporate big wigs can line their pockets with millions in bonuses. Meanwhile you might be called back at a lower wage and even worse healthcare coverage. GE only cares about what looks good on paper to benefit the company. Even though they have been cooking the books for years for big raises.

Screw the little guy the rich get richer.

wake up ... GE (and the vast majority of companies) does not care about you. It is interested in profits
