Do you think severence is given for the total employment years even if their was a lapse in employment? (If you had to leave for a month, year etc. and got hired back?)

In my experience it will not, unless it was within the time frame where your prior time was anniversaried in. For example I was laid off in 2002. Brought back in '09. Too long to grant me my prior time.
