Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

How many were affected?

I wish there was a way we could tally up the total amount of people who had been laid off yesterday. I looked through every article or piece of news I could find but in each one, it says that B&N refused to reveal the number of employees laid off. Any ideas?

We lost three from our store, and four from the store I transferred from. One person I know of on twitter lost five people and another person lost three, including himself. I think we should make a page where we can go and check in, do a tally.

My estimate is that I’m one of about 3500 let go yesterday (640 stores, average of 4 per store). This amounts to about 10 to 15% of B&N’s total workforce, but about 30% of the store level full time employees (about 4 of 13).

I am super curious about that too. My store lost four (including me), and reading through this site, it looks like most people are reporting anywhere from 2-5 layoffs. If every store that makes under 8 million laid off 2 at minimum, how many would that be? Plus, the DMs had to lay off their assistants. It's got to be 800-1000 people, right?

500+ stores, probably a minimum of at least one person per store, my district of 12 stores averaged 4-5 people per store... 2000-5000 people. Which sounds like a lot, but in the grand scheme of business, isn’t. At the end, sadly, BN is just another big box retailer who couldn’t compete. The things that made working for BN special in the 90’s are gone and have been trending down since the early 2000’s. Not many BNers wanted to see it, but it’s been headed this way since the big RM/lead/CBDM restructuring of 2004. When I met Len at the SM conference this year, he was still peppy, but completely disconnected from the in store realities. Pour one out for your friends and BN family tonight... but if you’re one of the ones left behind, get your resume circulating first.

I am one of those set free... I was a receiving manger and worked there for 21 years... Barnes and Noble use to foster talent and you could grow within the company ... of all the dedicated talented people in house Len twice hires a ceo from the outside ... first from Sears... fires them ... now he has brought in a Staples man ... this man is clueless .. ... what made B&N special is now gone ... for that I am sad ... I am 60 and was retiring in 18 months... I am off the wheel...
