They just eliminated all head cashiers and receiving managers. My position is safe, but my colleagues and friends- some of whom have been here for five plus years- left in tears with no job. Severance package is a joke. No warning, no respect. They think this is going to help? It just creates more stress for those of us left, and yet they think this will increase customer service. They problem isn’t customer service- it’s a lack of customers, period. Firing important people will not fix anything.

I was affected by this layoff and I knew the store like the back of my hand. I was training to become a merch. manager. I only took the head cashier position this past summer so I could gain more skills to become a manager for the store. Now stores across are left with people not ready to manage or have the proper training needed.
Company is imploding. Execs are desperate but don't have a clue as to what needs to be done to save the nation's last bookstore chain. Talk about penny wise and pound foolish! Constantly demand more of staff but eliminate the most competant, loyal employees. I have no confidence in my job security.
I worked for the company for five years, and I had friends from three separate stores who had worked there 18-20 years and we all got laid off today. Everyone is so sad. My manager was sad. I've been getting an influx of messages. The even sadder part? Getting rid of the full time people will reduce customer service drastically, because they got rid of some of the top sellers at the stores. We are full time because we are book fans. I single handedly told over 2000 books that made profit for the company for charity last year. This is bull.
Rec Mgr for 15 years, laid off today. I actually feel sorry for everyone else who is left there to pick up all the slack with no training and no decent compensation for all the extra work and verbal abuse from angry customers who cannot get their books because no one can find them.
I drove on icey roads to get to work this morning, clocked in, and was told I no longer have a job. Almost ten years at this store and they weren't even allowed to offer me a part time position!
new cmo just hired so i guess he's taking the pay from all the layoffs of decades long workers in our stores. great company we work for...
Wife called said same thing...THIS IS NO DRILL kids....for regular folks the future IS KINDA LOOKING TOUGH...she has worked there 15 plus years and is probebly O.K....Welcome to the NEW AMERICA.....RIGHT OR LEFT..WHAT EVER YOUR POLITICS WE ALL ARE IN DANGER...THE WORLDWIDE ELITE WILL TAKE THEIR HARVEST NO MATTER WHAT THE HUMAN COST...THEY HAVE FOR CENTURIES...REMEMBER AS ANY RANCHER WILL TELL YOU IT IS BEST TO KEEP THE STOCK QUITE BEFORE YOU HARVEST THEM.....
I was a receiving mgr for 20 years, just got laid off. F--- that sinking ship!
Don't forget, they just used all that money they're going to save to hire some new top execs. Just saw it in the news, while of course these layoffs are being kept quiet.
Yes!!! They have already cut back SO much on labor, so this is going to make them super hard. Ugh
Whoever is at the top is a dipshit.
This is 100% accurate, the same here in So Cal ... also this is accurate "They problem isn’t customer service- it’s a lack of customers, period" as the original poster noted.
