Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

"I'm not here to make any friends."

"I'm not here to make any friends." Three revolving teams of managers (above my ER manager) have parroted this to me in private one-on-one's over the last few years. What does THAT mean? And is there any place in any setting where this comment is justified?

I don't get it. Someone in leadership says to you, "I'm not here to make any friends." And you say, "Thank you for sharing"? "How can I help you in my role to not make any friends"? "Here's a list of people I think you should ostracize immediately"? Leadership may have been told that to help them with laying people off or whatever, by why would they pass that on to others? What is the proper response to that statement?

Everyone should be ready. Don't get into more debt. Cut spending. Have a buffer. Update your resume NOW. It will feel like crap if you've worked there for many years but trust me, in the end you will win and end up better off. You'll have the benefit of a severance, unemployement (file for it RIGHT away, there is a waiting period. it's not much but anything helps.)

May the stress of the day fade and fortune find each person on a new journey. See it as opportunity and an escape to a better place. Some do care.

It’s terrable that we will lose good people tomorrow. Hard for the leaders to pick who and to deliver the messages. May everyone find a peaceful path after and hopes the company learns from the action and takes action to fix the problems. You cant reduce to profitability. You have to reinvent and work for it. Godspeed.

As a warden in a maximum security prison. Oh but then I remember the effectiveness of kindness shown to inmates on death row in the movie "The Green Mile." So, even if someone is going to EXECUTE another, kindness is the way to go. I would rather be laid off or fired by someone who at least pretended to like me than to work for someone who openly expresses a desire to not be friends with anyone who remains.

The best thing is that you do not get attached to anyone when they fire you. Good for you :-)
