Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Let go today

15 year associate, position purged. Have a little time to try and find another position internally. Never heard of this site until today. Entire career was in ISD. Countless times have i KT’d information over to Infosys/cognizant/H1bs... never saw this coming though.

Friends left, please be warned that Walmart is currently standing up bangladore India to take on a lot of development / testing / support work that was once performed in bentonville. Many areas already but next big current wave is health and wellness and point of sale. If you support those domains, please be forewarned

Hoping to find another position, but after speaking to some other friends in the laid off club , I’m told it is very unlikely. No hard feelings, again, more shocked then anything

Not enough to just send out resumes out there, you need to apply. Apply for multiple positions you are qualified for, eventually you will get a call back. Don’t be fooled , you do have marketable skills at walmart. Yes you are undervalued at Walmart. Yes you do deserve better and a 40 hour week with better pay and benefits... apply!!!

Still at ISD and things are decelerating fast. Last year was the best time to get out IMO. We don’t know if they can afford severance one month pay for each year of service. Have been sending out resumes but no luck getting discouraged.

Think about this folks. JK was put in charge of the Walmart website 6 years ago. At that time Amazon’s revenue was $48B with a market cap of $82B. Now 6 years later Amazon’s revenue is $114B with a market cap of $540B. What has the Walmart ecommerce business done in that same time frame. Nothing. JK is squarely to blame for Walmart getting beat. He was clueless on what technology to implement to win. He used the EBay as a template. He was clearly outgunned. He spent 6 years building a sub par website, bought a bunch of worthless companies (some from his EBay friends) and spent billions. He couldn’t get it done so Walmart had to buy Jet. He should be disgraced after all that. Buying Jet should have been a signal he lost. Why he is still hanging around is a mystery. He talks a good game and has everyone fooled. As he expands India he continues to make people think he is the last hope against Amazon. Full disclaimer: I left Walmart last year after 20 years. It is a great company.

@4rxx, thanks for the link to the article. So, it was Duke who did the phone begging to get JK, ha ha, even funnier. Right after the Fast Company article Duke cops to Business Insider on not moving fast enough on eCommerce. Ya think?

But as the as the article points out, he had a lot on his plate with all the other problems biting him in the shorts, "throughout his tenure (Duke) Walmart has been criticized for paying workers low wages, not offering all employees healthcare, bribery scandals overseas and allegedly unsafe factory conditions."

http://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-ceo-shares-his-biggest-regret-2012-12

Oy vey! I almost feel bad for DM, what a mess. Sounded like a house of cards. When all your predecessor can say when asked about eCommerce is they've worked to improve the search engine, the sound of crickets must permeate the room.

And that's why it's a $hitshow now.

WalmartNoLabs is a joke in Silicon Valley. Everyone out here knows this is where you come when you can’t find another job. If you get turned down by another place just submit your resume here. I remember when I came in for an interview. It was laughable. I still work here but to be honest I got turned down by every other company.

If we hired the right people in Cal we could create something great with half the people. As the person below said. Look at all the people at Walmart Labs from EBay, Webex and other “yesterday companies”. The 90s called and they want their technology back. Now we all know why nothing works. What I ask is why would we run a companys ecomm technology team with washed out ex EBay team.

@wdw Walmart can’t afford leaders from modern tech companies, it can barely afford to give store workers a dollar raise! Think about it DM personally called JK because JK was hesitant to take a job with Walmart. DM lowered himself to phone begging to get a low to mid tier legacy leader from eBay. We could talk about ML too but in short he is a failed reject from Amazon. DM was desperate to get AZN sloppy seconds! It’s all in the articles folks.

Guys the only way to change the outsourcing issue is to get the laws changed. Every company is or will be taking advantage of the H1Bs.

If you’re mad, call your congressman. Vote based on labor issues.

You’re right about needing a union. Workers cut of their noses to spite their faces when they let their state legislatures pass all the right to work laws. Now you’re reaping what you sowed. It will be extremely hard to undo but if you don’t start working on it now, you will all be wage slaves.

I joined from Jet so there is nada of history. From what I hear everything is going to India. California King doesn’t have a choice. None of the leaders or engineers out there are from modern companies. They are from places like eBay, Webex, Tibco and others. Everyone knows the site is years behind so the way to catch is hire tons of people. Guess what. The way to do that is you go offshore. If we had leaders and engineers from newer companies like Apple, Google and Facebook we wouldn’t be in this situation. Our site reflects the fact that eBay was good 15 years ago. Sorry but more outsourcing is coming so we can play catch up.

We are clearly losing humanity. The CEOs who permit this degeneration would be billed (by some faceless stock analyst) as incapable of taking tough action to create shareholder value, were such actions not taken. The stock value would drop, and the board would find a CEO who is capable of taking such tough action. And the shareholder would get that additional 4-6% of value.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Let’s not forget it takes a h1b 2 to 3 years to get a bachelor degree in India vs 4 years in the USA. Masters 1 year. Sub par education system with fecal matter

@ryd Thank you for sharing. Some folks on this site think the H1b is their friend. They give them the KT and are surprised when Walmart purges their position.

I see a lot people on here blaming this on JK. I left WM ISD in 2012. They had been working with consultants from 2 different companies on how to outsource ISD since at least 2006. What you are seeing now is the result of those efforts. Project Harvest which I also endured before leaving really was the first step in implementing plans to specifically "outsource our ISD department" and that is a direct quote from a correspondence I saw with my own eyes. As someone posted below, every request to document and train a half price H1B Visa holder or add to the knowledge base is really just their way of gathering knowledge to replace you. It is not personal, you are not the issue, you are a perfectly good employee. Walmart, just like Silicon Valley wants to hire indentured servants from 3rd world countries who will work for half your wages and provide the corporation with government subsidized funding for the other half of their pay. These workers are not more highly skilled, better educated, or more industrious than you. They are just cheaper and easier to control. Do your best and get your resume together and hold your head up high while you plan your exit strategy. I tell you this because I did take it personally and it took many years to overcome the damage that I personally suffered from believing that I was the issue. Don't let that happen to you!

I don’t think it’s possible to oust a leader at Walmart. Saying the truth in AES gets you fired. We need a union

Post ID: @1eie+Qxpw3uJ

How do you really oust a leader? Unless you have audio/video of an egregious act, taking a picture of a break room isn't going to help. The average shopper doesn't give a rip if the retailer's workers aren't U.S. born; shoppers only care that the goods are cheap.

Even if a leader is let go, they never have to suffer enough, except for maybe their ego. There have been some who are an absolute disaster. Walmart dismisses those people under the guise of retirement, or going wherever it is failed leaders go to 'explore other opportunities,' all get to walk away with their dignity still intact, a golden parachute and a f'ing cake party.

@thx Leak a photo of ISD break rooms so American shoppers know demographic Walmart provides the jobs (infosys/cognizant.) Walmart will learn same lesson as Disney and NFL.

1hph and all of you.

Calling out ISD anonymously doesn't change anything. WM will back up these managers within Walmart walls. If these people are ousted publically, WM has no choice but to let them go.

@idwv, you make a great point that highlights the bully behavior going on. I think we are seeing a lot of this now at Walmart. As you say, it's a nightmare. Eventually, these bully bosses self-destruct, but not before they've hurt lots of people and the organization. We see the same thing going on now in the media and government, it gets really ugly and is tawdry as it all gets exposed.

It always helped me to be able to recognize what these people were doing, otherwise I would have thought I was losing my mind. I then let my disgust of the situation light a fire in me to work hard on getting out. There is no way to win with these people, they are on a collision course.

Here's a link to great article about bully bosses:

What is JKs AES scores? After he let go Randy I now work for his cronies in California and it is a nightmare. Let’s be real here. All of them couldn’t find jobs anywhere else so JK hires them. If you don’t believe me look them up on LinkedIn. No one else would hire them. JK keeps them and clears out Bentonville. Real smart.

If you are asked to document your work, KT, knowledge share they are telling you your job is short term. Doesn’t matter if you are told to document for a infosys h1b, new hires or “for the team.” More you document, easier it is to replace you. Sad truth

Sorry for anyone getting RIFd. With what is going on in healthcare, and the bad press Walmart continues to get over health benefits, maybe that area should be taken over by India, lol. Honestly, if Walmart is serious about controlling expenses, they need to employ capable people who do more than play a shell game and pass off as new or innovative, programs that have been around for decades. It's embarrassing to read about and even more so when people who know better ask you about it.

I've been to a number of conferences with some really intelligent players in the healthcare space that have Indian counterparts who are educated in the U.S., and also understand healthcare policy, economics, AI and analytics. Not a shock, AWS was at these conferences too; they are going to nail it in healthcare, which just means more money to pour into Amazon. With over $3.2 trillion in healthcare spending now and 20% of the GDP expected to come from healthcare by 2025, that's another boat Walmart cannot afford to miss or get behind on.

I'd like to see Walmart start holding other areas of the company accountable for results and real innovation, not just store operations and eCommerce. Seems like some departments are allowed to hang on to long tenured people who don't have what it takes to make progress, they've gotten a pass forever.

Sorry to hear, but.......

The writing is on the wall. Has been for 2 years. I got the hint and left in Sept after 10 years. My team was hit in April and they took the employees that were over 50, had 10 or more years seniority and had health issues. Just an unceremonious taking the 'trash' out to the curb. That was my wake up call in addition to hearing all the rumors going around. I immediately updated my resume and posted it on 5 sites. I was bombarded with job offers. Some not so great. Most needed a relocation.

Everyone has to realize that no job is safe anymore. My choice was to wait it out until I was RIFd or be proactive and ready to give my notice. My manager was honestly shocked when I called. I had no longer 'communicated' with leadership. I learned my lesson when I was a bit vocal when ISD did Project Harvest in 2009. I told them my opinion of the reorg and also offered ideas to make the reorg better. It was held against me for the better part of my time with WM afterward. My friends told me that you never voice a negative opinion on anything at the HO. You just shake your head, agree and keep your mouth shut. Hard lesson learned.

Now, I was lucky because I was remote for my last 3 years with ISD. I already relocated from the outhouse of America known as Arkansas. I had many more opportunities in my new area for jobs and one with better pay came along. With less stress. With better leadership with better vision. I cannot express how euphoric I am when I get to my new job. I am so much happier after leaving ISD.

Good luck to everyone that is RIFd or leaves of their own volition.
