Question on availability for part-time associates

If you are available only in mornings

Can the store manager put you to “ open” availability for Black Friday and Thursday?

I was under the impression that only full time people had “open” availability.

Is there a certain number of hours they are required to schedule between shifts?

I know sears closes at midnight Thursday but will have an overnight crew to Rad/Ran the store for the 5AM opening on Friday

If I came in at 9:30pm Thursday for say a 5 hour shift which would end approx 2:30AM Friday can they make me come back in later in the afternoon on Friday? Ugh

Is thanksgiving a paid holiday?

Why do retail associates get surprised when they are scheduled long shifts on 2 of the busiest days of the year? It’s all hands on deck.

In our Sears store we are so severely understaffed and desperate for help that they let the part timers dictate their schedules including black Friday weekend so they won't quit. The store then forces what few full timers we have and leads to cover the part timers shifts. None of our part timers are working Thanksgiving because they refused to do so.

It really depends on the store manager. I have a regret full time job elsewhere and do part timebat Sears. My store manager is completely accommodating.

They will schedule you whatever they want. If you work another job too bad. You are suppose to be available that Thursday - Sunday.

Those are the two days a year you know you will be working crazy hours. It’s retail. Whether you are part time or full time availability doesn’t matter. If you work retail it is a known fact you work thanksgiving and Black Friday. It all depends on which state regarding time off between shifts but I regularly work shifts that have me closing at 11pm and being back in the store at 6am. It’s two days, you will be okay.

Yes, part-timers will receive time and a half from 12:01am to 11:59pm on Thanksgiving. Some years (unsure about this year), those working between 12:01am to 5:59am Friday also get an extra .50 in shift differential.

I can't comment on the availability question... Most of my store managers throughout the years have been respectful of availability on Thanskgiving/Black Friday, but will offer additional hours to those interested, even if it is outside of your availability (especially for students or those with other jobs).

Check your state laws concerning split shifts. In some states they can't make you work a split without your consent on a signed form.
