Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Resign soon or wait severance package?

I thought my case may apply to lots of other folks here. I have 12 years in ASIC HW and got 6 rating, previous 5, 5, 5 as Staff eng. My BU doesn't seem to be profitable and I am sure it will be slashed. All upper management is Indian and I am not, so I would be one of the first to go. I have seen in Broadcom that their severance is similar to what Q has been paying (two weeks per year). Should I wait for the layoff blood river and severance package while preparing to sell house and sharpening skills and sending resumes or should I accept the first reasonable job offer with relocation package? I have kids at school so delaying would benefit them until summer break. What would be the timeframe the massive layoffs would take place, 6 months or 3 months?

After spending 2018 polishing contacts and resume, now is looking like a great time to bail ahead of the next round of cuts and chops. 5000 more heads to roll this year.

I would at least wait until March to even begin thinking about this. You'll have clarity then based on who does and does not get chosen on the board.

Even if this "hostile takeover" (or merger) deal goes through, you're forgetting the big roadblock of regulatory approvals around the world. We're, what, 12 mo into the NXP deal, and it's business as usual while we fight the regulatory battles around the world.

Your reasonable time Iine for transition is probably 2019, if needed.

cool Du f-- down!!

It takes a year to get in shape..

especially if you have not been doing "hands on" work.

You are right, you should start applying and attending interviews.

You should start refreshing algorithms.. and computer programming basics

you should also reach out to all those contacts you thought in these 12 years will never come to use....

also, revise the last performance reviews.. identify what you really lack.

what you were proud of.

what you really wanted to learn ever.. does not need to be in QCOM chip related..

re-connect with your passion..

remember ..its not just tech industry that pays well. .there are other industries too..

most importantly --dont panic..

Your time horizon is way too short. IF there is a broadcom deal, we are looking at 12 months+ to even close it. So concentrate on your current BU performance and if there is any overlap with NXP. Those are your short term decision points.

When Broadcom invaded my company, the severance packages were a joke!

I will find something now before there are a thousand skilled Q engineers looking for jobs.

"All upper management is Indian and I am not, so I would be one of the first to go"

Such a narrow mindset. Idiots are everywhere, don't differentiate based on race.

I hope you get a good job where you don't have to feel this way.

Agree with previos comment, I moved to Bay Area first and then once the kids are out school I moved the whole family. Find something now before there are no jobs available.

ASIC HW

Most hardware companies are in a state of turmoil. The actual development is being moved over to Asian countries like China, Taiwan, Korea, and Malaysia where the actual hardware manufacturing factories are located. And no, not India, India is not a hardware manufacturing hotbed. Too few companies are actually hiring those with Analog expertise. Strike while the iron is hot, if you find a job, take it. That would be my advice. You can relocate the kids a few months later, if you have to move.
