Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

Incompetence and arrogance

Cutting 12,000 heads has to be the clearest indicator of how incompetent senior management is in GE.

As an engineer in GE Power, I've been used to having my technical decisions highly scrutinized. And rightly so. If we put out a product that fails, the company fails. Too bad these clowns don't get the same level of scrutiny.

The same story keeps playing out: arrogant, know-it-all managers flit about backslapping each other for a job well done - upending the lives of 12,000 people. Despicable.

I know a number of the 12,000. Some of them are very high performers. Message #1: people don't matter at GE. Message #2: performance doesn't matter at GE.

How can you claim otherwise?

Design reviews were very good, where a diverse group of experts get into a room and go over every aspect of the design. During these exercises, profound details come out that boost the collective knowledge of the group. The leaders expected people to bring out valuable and critical information instead of just yes everything. The spirit of this was thorough and critical vetting and analysis.

GE management today mostly have never done the work and don't have the ability to do the work of groups they manage, and usually don't have any interest other than their own self promotion and making changes to show how they are change agents.

GE corporate six sigma culture is destroying the business from bad decisions made without critical vetting and analysis by experts. GE needs t restore the culture of the expert, instead of the six sigma change agents who have little depth of knowledge of the business.

GE is now a mess because of this and most of us wonder if it can be fixed. GE is now in failure mode, like a bad turbine design that had not been properly vetted thru the design review. GE needs a design review from the bottom up and especially from the top down.

Why did you ever believe people mattered at GE? Because they were nice to you before?

Yes, because they wanted you to work hard for them. Now GE doesn't need you so it's showing its true colors. Oh and BTW, 100% of corporations are like this so if you think you'll just go over to XYZ company and all will be well, you're in for a rude awakening.
