Prior to being laid off in 2015, I moved any personal data such as pictures, personal docs, personal emails, etc to a file marked personal. I then notified HR and IT and was told it was fine to move the file to a thumb drive. I'm sure they accessed the file to check it but I never had any issues with transferring the data.

I have just one personal folder on the laptop to keep personal items separate. I also do this with my web browser. It is important to keep personal items separate from work.

Plot twist: OP got fired for abusing personal use policies and for loading his work PC with hundreds of gigs of personal stuff.

I say this, related to someone who is a CPA and had her workstation stolen from her house.

Her husband's gaming rig with the $1,000 graphics card was in a no-name case but her $400 Best Buy Dell said...

Dell.

Besides... You keep tax documents on a machine?

Duuude... WTH?

"If you have personal files on any company issued computer or storage device of which you would like to make copies to take with you, please contact your HR Generalist to make arrangements to do so. During your transition period, do not copy any files from a company device to a personal device or cloud-based storage without advance approval from your HR Generalist and IT Security, and do not connect to any external storage device at all (e.g. USB device) to any company laptop. In case of misconduct or violation of company policy, your employment will be terminated prior to your Termination date."

OP here....thx for all response...

not trying to get or copy any code or Q docs etc as I am done with Q...

Just trying to find a legal way to copy my personal data such as my tax docs etc from laptop...

As someone responded here, they described procedure in 2015 layoff on how to copy personal data...so may be I will have to try to find out that procedure and follow that I guess

All files get checked, don't try to copy any HDL/RTL file to external storage or the IT spyware will generate an alarm going up the management chain. I have been thru this with one of my direct reports.

Any file file downloaded from agile also gets special scrutiny.

Qcom has a large IT team that deals with IP protection. Please be extra careful with what you do, and think twice about every step you take.

depending on your risk tolerance (if you are getting a nice severance, i wouldn't risk it), you can zip it, encrypt it and try to push it to github or scp, or something. usb transfers have gotten friends of mine in trouble in the past. if you're slated for layoff IT has already silently put software on your comp to try to prevent any data transfer, so it all depends on if you can outsmart that, and if you're willing to risk it.

good luck

Maybe you can move all personal data to a "PERSONAL" directory and ask IT to make a personal backup (open your last IT ticket). During 2015 layoff, folks received instructions on how to move personal data to a USB external disk. Just be extra careful, they will scan every single bit.
