To anyone who gets laid off: I was in your shoes last year, except I was totally blindsided. It s---ed. The biggest thing to remember is that layoffs are not personal. So often, our work becomes part of our identity. You don't realize how much of your self-worth is tied to your job until you lose it.
Just remember that they are using numbers and fear of legal repercussion to lay you off. They have to justify eliminating positions, so it is all done carefully based on what you look like on paper. They will eliminate certain skill sets that they deem unnecessary, entire teams, etc. It's truly not about your performance. In fact it's better for them legally if they eliminate good performers and people of all ages. Obviously some low performers will be let go as well. But a lot of good people will be out of a job. To you I say: be strong, it isn't personal, you will get through this. Sorry for what you're going to have to go through, and good luck.
