Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Forced "Persona" Time Off

For years now Cisco forces Americans and Canadians to take multiple days off at Christmas. Other locations are encouraged but have better employment laws to prevent. Not sure how Cisco can declare something a mandatory day closed and then force certain employees to take as vacation days, feels illegal.

You obviously haven’t been through this before. You also have to be on call with a one hour response while still billing vacation time even when you aren’t in support. Forced charity for the disabled company with over $70B in the bank.

This thread will be automatically shut down for the holidays. If you are caught looking at this thread during shutdown, you will find yourself on the next LR short-list.

I never booked the shutdown time despite numerous reminder emails. I just took the time anyway and did SFA. Saved the leave for when I wanted it. I mostly just pretended to work from home when I was really on holiday. Come the LR all that unused leave gets paid out. Hardly ever booked a real day off unless I was going for an interview. I always liked the shutdown at Xmas. My email inbox went quiet, and my phone stopped ringing. It was the one time of year where I could truly get peace and quiet at Cisco.

Probably because you get 5 more days of holiday. That much time, I wouldn't give a sh.. about a shutdown either and would welcome it.

I'm in the UK. I'm under no legal obligation to take the shutdown time. I take it because I can genuinely relax knowing everything is shutdown. Personally I don't see the issue.

Of all the issues, this is my lowest worry!

My 'career' with Cisco lasted a little under 2 years (I retired on my wife's birthday) after 17 years with a company Cisco bought. I was a department head and told my staff PTO was their option, not Cisco's as long as we were not in the middle of some crisis that required PTO be rescheduled. I was always uneasy with the forced PTO demands by Cisco, I thought it was inconsistent with labor law and, unethical to demand PTO.

The Shutdown is a way for Cisco to get your PTO off of the books so that they reduce liabilities and make the balance sheet look better so that they can meet their numbers and the execs make more money off of the stock. It is wrong to force people to take PTO at a set time. You are being denied the right to take your vacation when you want to. Christmas is the most expensive time to book flights and hotels. Unlimited vacation time is the same idea financially only worse as you will not have a right to any vacation and you will have to beg for days off.

LOl, if you think that is bad get ready for the implementation of the discussions around no pto and instead you will have “unlimited vacation.” It falls into the same sell job category as “the people deal”. Basically it is a way for Cisco to get the most work out of you possible and sell you that is a good thing because you have “unlimited vacation” now. In reality it is a way to get the pto liability off the balance sheet. It also means you get less of a payout when you are eventually laid off.

Shutdown is same everywhere but forced PTO should be avoided.
