EMBO tax for IM staff

Does anyone know how the EMBO tax work for IM personnel? I mean, every month my salary gets deducted by this so-called tax that is handled internally by schlum but I wonder if there is any légal background to it.

Supposedly it is used to pay the taxes from my country of assignment but let's say that I need some kind of legal proof that said taxes have been paid to my country of assignment, what should I do?

This EMBO system is incredibly obscure and I have heard some horror stories about it (basically schlumberger taxes your salary but never redistribute the tax to your assigned country)

This really is a confusing thing. The local taxes are way lower than what EMBO charges.

Unless your check comes from offshore account, which it does not. All tax rules apply. Ask me how I know.

EMBO = Employees Must Bend Over

When I was IM, I paid both local taxes, and the EMBO fee from my payroll. I would later receive a refund of the local taxes from EMBO (in my case, 1 month later, but for some locations it is every three months).

If you see tax on the payslip that is your proof it has been paid to a local government.

If there is no reciprocal tax agreement between your home state and Congo then you may well be liable for tax in both locations.

Depending on your home location you may have to pay social security or equivalent on part or all of your overseas wage. EMBO is also subject to restrictions if you are a US resident as there are different rules regarding the service.

As almost all offshore banks provide full transparency to their clients finances to most governments you will only be able to avoid for so long.

You can Google Tax treaties and your home country and see what is out there

For example there is no treaty between the US and the Congo. This may mean you have to pay double taxes or it may mean you have to pay top up taxes if you are from the US working in the Congo. Where ever you are from and are working it would be prudent to talk to an accountant sooner rather than later

I am assigned to Congo and although I do see the tax deduction on my payslip I wonder if the local administration gets anything. This kind of paperwork might be requested by my home state when I get back, and if I cant provide it chances are im going to be taxed twice (once by slb, second time by my home country)

If you are full IM then you only pay embo.

If you are GM then different.

I know some people have overseas account and they have asked embo to pay them in overseas account to avoid tax.

Do it ! F--- Trump

What country were/are you assigned to? Tax deductions should show on your payslip

I did not receive any tax notice relevant to my country of assignment. How can I even get this? Not sure if this can even be compared to a ponzi scheme as to me slb is just getting money from me without contributing to any tax system.

EMBO is an external company/organization to Schlumberger notionally

You pay all local taxes and this is evident on your pay slip and at the end of the year you get the tax notice relevant to the country of assignment. You also pay EMBO at a rate pre determined by your grade. Every 3 months you get back all the local taxes.

Think of EMBO as a Ponzi Scheme to distribute the tax burden of all IM employees. If you are paying EMBO above the local rate of tax you are paying into the system. If you are below the local rate of tax you are gaining. Or at least that is how it was described to me...
