Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

Big layoff coming in India

A big layoff is going to come in India. Indian Railways is thinking of cancelling it's locomotive contract to GE. This is going to be huge blow to GE Transportation business which is already in tough situation due to slow down of loco business in US as well as oversees markets.

How many jobs and when is the question.

Anybody knows more about this? When India starts having big layoffs is when I start getting worried. If they are laying off the cheapest workforce, what can the rest of us expect in the near future?

Kinda funny that the argument for Electric is "Clean" but the majority of India's power generation I believe is "Coal" so what is more eco friendly, an efficient Diesel, without the need for additional infrastructure and costing less per unit, or Electric, which relies on infrastructure, is more expensive per unit, and is not eco friendly

I know for a fact that the cost of an engineer in India is roughly 80% the cost of a domestic...not exactly "cheap." There is fierce competition for talented engineers in India and job-hopping is prevalent, which continues to drive costs higher.

GE will eventually bite the India workers as well. For now they are the best options for GE outsourcing in areas of IT, engineering. Also, their India benefits are different than an EU or US worker.

Question , why is the best and brightest company (GE) in the world not looking at electric locomotives ...?

As I recall France blocked Alstom transportation division from being wrapped into the GE-Alstom Power acquisition. The question for India; do they have the infrastructure to support electric trains as opposed to conventional diesel engines.. ? GE has some hybrid technology that could be used. Anyway, never threaten GE they simply will go to the next best offer for low cost labor. If John Rice is heading there he going to have a big stick in his hands ...India need GE more than GE needs India.

GE India has new CEO who is going aggressive for big job cut in India. But cutting jobs in india will adversely impact GE as GE has invested into these engineers and letting talent go in drain will hurt GE only.

They are cheap. A position that pays ~ 80 K in Niskayuna is worth ~20 K in Bangalore. True story!
