As a drilling service provider there should be clear opportunity for smith bits to hold significant market share. If this isn't happening then there should be a shake up on how bits are marketed and a review of the expertise of the people who sell bits. Smith bits is a strong brand name and should be capitalised upon.

It is definitely a result of Schlumberger's management of smith Bits. Before SLB bought them they were number one. The move from Ponca has just put the final nail in the coffin.

The reality is that in some geological formations one bit can be as good as another. In other formations performance is everything in bit sales. Understand the market and match the right technology with the geological conditions. Don't try to sell bulls--- and earn the trust of your clients. When you have successful applications then promote it but in a way potential clients can see the benefit and not necessarily in the way the bit manufacturer evaluates performance. Don't underestimate reedhycalog bits - they have a very good track record. Smith bits also. In some fields I've been involved in the only bit that's been successful in certain formations has been smith. I have used bits from both extensively.
