Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Why don’t you quit?

Serious question. Half the post on here involve someone b--ching about how terrible it is to work at Sears. So why don’t youquit?

Unemployment is 4%, WTF??? Honestly there are jobs everywhere. You could go to Lowes, Home Depot, Costco, hell I even saw the Post Office is hiring at $17 an hour. Why live this way. Just quit.

Please post why you b--ch about the place and don’t leave. Especially those of you saying you make minimum wage. In metro Detroit no one pays minimum wage. Not even sears.

There is rarely a constructive comment (like, we could improve sales if.... or why don’t we just xxxx and then we would...) it’s almost all “I hate this sh*thole, Eddie is getting rich, waah waaah”

Just leave, it’s not hard at all.

i mean it's either than or sears should have disappeared a decade ago. Most people would have called it by now. Maybe he has other motives behind the scenes but he's still keeping this company alive for reasons absolutely no one but him can understand.

Not trying to be a downer but it's kinda the truth.

Good Wages are relative to where you live. $17 can be great in some areas and not so great in other more expensive places.

You guys are so simple minded. Jesus.

You think $17 an hour is good pay? The BC sales leads are making more than that. Most of them are in the 20's an hour.

I am not a DM I am an ASM and I work my a-- off. I have been with the company a long time and my hard work has gotten me to the pay I have. I never said $17 an hour was sh--, I just said it was a substantial pay cut for me. If you think 32,000 is great pay I feel sorry for you that you set your sights so low. I am a worker and hard one at that! Why don't f--- yourself!

You should be s---ing eddies c@ck for keeping you in a 70k a year job while trying to save this place.

Truth is so are most of you. Either bust a-- or move on, I’m tired of carrying people like you, I got 25 years in this sh@thole But at least I recognize that we were bankrupt before Eddie came in. FU all.

@OP First of all who do you think you are? Everyone has their own reasons. I have worked for the company for many years. What the hell am I going to do with $17 an hour? That's an awful big pay cut. I am one year away from retirement do you know how difficult it is to get a job at my age? They won't say it but no one wants to hire an older associate. I have applied but I know my age is holding me back from job interviews. So I am just going to stick it out till the end and yes it is miserable! I don't know where you live but in Detroit Sears does pay minimum wage. Why don't you get off this board, it's for Sears employees to vent not people like you who think they know it all!

I worked for Sears from July 2005 - January 2015. Lots of memories that are filled plenty of good times and quite a bit of bad as well. My last year and a half there was probably the best time I had even when the writing was on the wall with the company going downhill. Though there were stretches before that where it was pretty fun and exciting to go to work. I’d say many times during late 2007 - mid 2012 might have been fun for at my store.

I left because I was forced to move to Pittsburgh, PA and also realized it was time to move on and attempt something new and different. I work as one of four ASMs at a sports apparel store now and make $14 an hour plus an extra $2 for gamedays. I found something fulfilling both personally and professionally and wouldn’t trade it in for anything less right now.

Do I regret working for Sears? No. It gave me valuable learning experience on how to handle customers and how to treat employees if you’re in a management position. Do I wish things would’ve been better at times? Yes, of course. Do I miss Sears? No, I don’t. I moved on easily. Do I symphasize with the people who are struggling with the company? Yes, but everyone has their reasons for staying. Who am I to judge or criticize?

Just my two cents and my experience. Figured I’d share with all of you.

OP here - yes I work for Sears. No, I don’t get minimum wage. Thanks to those of you who gave sincere answers. Most of the people I work with are great and the higher managers are reasonable and fair. It’s not a terrible job at oil, I’ve managed an instant oil change (so much worse), done sales (stressful and u feel like you’re lying) this is a decent place to work.

I understand people who hate it and are 60 something etc. but if you’re already making minimum wage, why complain and not just quit. That was really my question and that’s what half of the posters on here claim.

@llx I get it. Don't let the "nasty" people get to you with why do you stay at Sears, etc, etc. You are just doing what you know to be the best for you right now. It is really easy for "nasty" people to come on here and talk down to associates. How do you know they have jobs and are doing well? Why would they waste their time on this forum?

@sik Exactly. Also being worried about how much physical labor the new job will require even though you're doing a lot of physical labor now.

It might be outdated but many people thought Sears would their career until retirement or they only have a couple of years left until retirement so they're waiting it out.

The negative management style hasn't helped anyone's self esteem either. Makes people feel bad about themselves.

If you're in your 60s and have worked at Sears for 30-some years, it's not so easy to find another job.

Most older people can't pass the new computer tests they give you to get hired and

maybe for the other people can't pass drug tests.

I'm not the one who made this post but sometimes when I read posts here about how unsatisfied people are I ask myself this question. I worked for sears years ago. I was unsatisfied. I found another job and I left. My only work experience was sears as well and I only had a year or so of job experience period. I feel like people psych themselves out which makes it difficult.

I stay because most of the people at sears are great! It does become your second family!

It seems like a lot of people from yahoo finance postings come over to this site to beat down morale as they rip the company apart in that site as well as other companies

I noticed on one post on yahoo finance under SHLD mention this site a lot

In my store people stay & people leave for a variety of reasons. In my region unemployment is not 4% but higher. We do pay minimum wage for associates. Leads & managers make more of course. Leads & associates do not receive raises so annual reviews are meaningless.

People stay because they have worked there for 15 or 20 or 30 or 40 years and feel that's all they know. They are making enough that they don't want to start over at minimum wage somewhere else in their career. Most have no college or only some college many years ago. People get insecure & scared to leave what they know. They have worked with many of the same people for years so it's like family at the store.

For a good part of their career Sears was a place to be proud of. That feeling was imprinted during the impressionable younger years.

As the poster below said, Sears on your resume is unfortunately a negative right now especially if you have been there forever. It hurts to say that but it is true. The only advantage is that you can emphasize loyalty to an employer who cares about loyalty and that no one is going to question why you want to leave.

Completely agree, who the heck are you and whats the name of the horse you rode

in on, oh btw if you love sears so much then why are you even on here, Go back on pebble. You must be a SGM that works his or her team to death making them come in 6 days a week while you just walk around and tell them how bad everything looks, and how bad the people are doing with credit and PA sales, oh and dont forget RAD-RAN , ﹰI will sceam if ﹰI hear that term anymore, fold something when you walk by it, dont come find me to do it.....DO IT YOURSELF YOU LAZY A$$.

BTW I send out application every day , only problem i have stayed at sears far to long and who wants to hire a manager from sears. With Sears on my job history ,it has almost made made it to where no one will hire me.

And yes we only hire at min wage, unlessyour in sales then your on a draw, with sales being down your probly in the whole with sales being down 50% to last year.

So shut up and stay in his office

@OP - Why should you care that people complain on this site? Why should you care that associates choose to stay rather than find another job? Why does anyone owe you explanations? Why do you tell people what they should do? Why are you so full of yourself? Why do your opinions matter? Why are you even relevant?
