Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Intel is doing great and QC -------> to the drain

Our management is so bad, just look at Intel doing not great but excellent, making money, giving away bonus, hiring people etc

QC removing the sodas, limiting travel, changing toilet paper. Realistically QC is ending soon.

Intel is doing well, but not in the modem area. It‘s somewhat of an open secret by now that there will be layoffs at INTC at least in SD before the end of the year. No idea how other parts of their mobile business are affected. Intel has been refocussing their strategy for several years now. I wouldn‘t be surprised if they pulled money out of mobile to put it into something that looks more promising.

@tws What? Intel and other are working on modem now? Wow, you are such a non-expert. A lot of companies have been working on modems for a long time. There is nothing new about that.

And yes, you could theoretically get an application processor from anywhere, but the cost of integrating it with the modem is prohibitive for most companies. Takes Apple a whole year to do that for their products. So the idea that smartphone manufacturers would take an Intel slim modem and then spend millions and millions on integrating it with a generic application processor is pure fantasy.

Many can provide apps processor, the only good thing about QC was the Modem and no longer since Intel and other are working on modems now.

How will OEMs switch from Qualcomm to Intel if Intel has no product that can compete with Snapdragon? Apple is basically the only customer that is still looking for a slim modem, while all other customers look for a modem with integrated application processor in a SoC. Intel does not have this kind of product.

QC is indeed in serious troubles, even in its core modem business.

2G will be eliminated in the U.S. by the end of the next year, after that, QC's core products, the modem, will have to run pure VoLTE and possibly 5G. CDMA will be dead, and the CDMA royalty fee based "QC tax" will be permanently gone.

Apple proves to the world that

  • Intel's LTE modem has comparable radio performance as QC's,

  • Intel modem has much better power performance than QC modem, because Intel's chip manufacturing techniques are more advanced than TSMC or Samsung;

  • Intel subsidizes and their modems are cheaper.

Both Intel and QC are shipping good LTE modems now, and they are investing heavily on 5G R while at QC, seems like everyone is wanting to leave and nobody gives a sh-- about Customer's requests.

It's very likely that after a couple of years, many smartphone OEMs will follow Apple and start using Intel modem and dump QC.

With CDMA royalty fee gone, and, if more modem customers choose Intel, QC should have a very tough way to go in the next 5 years.

Ridiculous. The Lord Jesus will provide a hedge of protection around Qualcomm. Jesus is the answer!

Management is hell bent on pushing out any successful and capable executive they see threat to their inner circle. They pushed MR to Intel. They pushed others to our competitors. Samsung, Apple, you name it.

Now it's time for all this to show up in the bottom line results. You cannot be incompetent forever without any impact to the business.

Q execs are failing at talent and technology management, not to mention the business side. This is a train wreck.

Goodbye Q. It used to be a good place to work once upon a time before incompetence took over.
