Thread regarding Cabela's Inc. layoffs

We are going backward instead forward

Here is what I have heard from my husband and his friends who work in IT at the corp office and in another office.

Bass Pro is running on some ancient technology as well. It is horrible to work with. They expect cabelas IT to take a 10 year step backwards and use their systems. Their IT security is a joke because they dont have any, all they need is one good hack.

They won't use cloud technology because the one person that runs things in their IT is scared of it and doesnt understand it so they are holding onto some ancient tech.

Bass Pro is a complete 100 steps backwards when it comes to technology.

Smart move investing in an IT career and not something that involves writing.

Bunch of technically inept morons. Let's b--ch about a department we have no idea how things are done....all we can do is run outlook and play call of duty...but the IT guy is an a--hole cause he has admin rights and I dont...IT is everywhere..in every modern business...dont be mad that you now a yard for a living cause all you can do is turn on your monitor and even that is hard for you.

"Most the people here complaining about why IT does certain things probably don't even know how to turn on a PC and are mad they make 10 bucks an hour. Don't worry once you get laid off you can go complain about another companies IT elsewhere."

Mad about $10 an hour, sure. But after 15 years as senior development manager of a large Corp I think I can manage to turn on a PC. Your attitude highlights one of the biggest problems I saw in Cabela's; "wouldn't it be nice if we could run the company without the stores?". To be honest, with all the fails I witnessed I surprised you all haven't already been let go.

Maybe, but a lot were complaining that they had to sit around and wait for someone to even show up to work on their computer, and when they did had to wait even more while it was being fixed. It would work for a few days and happen all over again.

Not saying it was necessarily the people, seems like a combination of people, bad decisions on technology (see media bank, etc) , and old computers that were hardly ever replaced.

Way too many Directors and above promotions at the expense of technology. Those wacked priorities takes you where cabelas is today, a soon to be forgotten company.

AGREED. One time I needed a printer hooked up to print from my computer (a simple driver and maybe a restart), easy to do for most employees including me. But of course in the Cabelas world, you need admin rights, because they needed to feel important.

For something i could have done in 2 minutes with permission, took them 4 hours because they went and messed with something that wasnt broken. Eventually that simple printer was hooked up.

Im all for permissions and security but come on. Avoided them as much as I could

Millions spent on tech? Just toys for the IT folks. Little of it made it "down" to the stores where it could have had a positive effect on service. One of the worst IT dept I have ever seen.

Sure Cabela's spent a fortune, read billions on technology, but it 1) had to be duct tapped and bailing wire together because those best of breed solutions didn't have natural integrations, 2) they were usually unsupported buy the time they went into production, 3) there were a couple of SaaS systems, but they were the minority, the CIO and finance preferred the on prem cost model, 4) the business units processes were so ingrained on the legacy systems, multi-version upgrades to leverage new functionality to improve business processes were difficult and costly to retrofit to the legacy way of doing things, 5) security concerns/issues were only discussed behind closed doors...the list could go on.

So, Cabela's IT infrastructure is nothing to brag about. The only things interesting about Cabela's IT infrastructure are inventory/SKU counts/locations, customer records, and employee data. All can be easily exported, scrubbed, and imported into BP systems.

Just BS , spending money on so called new technology and never working hard to get the value out of the investment landed Cabela’s to be bought by competitor.

Now people are complaining but not realizing that end of day technology is to help make business better not other way around.

Good anology would be, have you seen a farmer using Ferrari in his field, instead of old pickup........lol

The winners get to make the rules. They own everything now...it's their show.

"we are going backwards." You mean: Cabela's. "We" now means BP.
