Has WDC given up on HAMR don't seem to hear much about it theses days. I know Seagate are still trying to get it to work..

There are WD people working on HAMR for sure as suggested by the publications. But WD is betting more on flash these days.
HAMR is the technology which is used for mas----ation.
Ah, so HR does read this message board. Couldn't keep in the shadows could you. I'm pretty sure Seagate knows what we're doing and where, as long as they don't find out how we're doing it. The proprietary information would be how we are doing it as the fact that we are attempting to do it has appeared in many tech publications and therefore has already moved from proprietary ownership to open knowledge in the public domain.
You are giving away company proprietary information on a public message board that is visible to competitors alike. Please realize that such questions could also be posted by competitors.
Most of the development is being done in the Heads division. And then when Heads can make a reliable head, they will also do development in Media. I think there is a team of > 100 development engineers/technicians at the Fremont Head wafer fab working on HAMR alone. That's what I hear around the water cooler anyway.
