Bitter Workforce

http://www.ToledoBlade.com/Energy/2017/08/29/Energy-industry-s-layoffs-lead-to-bitterness-in-work-force.html

==================================

Zach Scott was a year old and his brother was still in the womb when their dad got laid off from Halliburton in 1986, the year after oil prices tanked and ushered in the largest industry downturn until, some argue, the current one.

Within two years, 20 percent of the workers in the oil and gas industry had lost their jobs. Many of them did not return and they discouraged their children from going into the industry.

@bqcy, Yes, and they make a better living than those with similar credentials in other fields, in general. But you do have to put up with the BS. In general, if you are subject to being penalized more for earning more, you tend to vote for the party which favors lower taxes. Of course, it's hard to tell which one is which sometimes - understood.......

-9llh... not sure I agree. Being a displaced Yankee, it seems to me there are a lot more conservatives in oil and gas than the average, and their numbers increase the further you get out of the office into the field. I will not say if I consider this bad or good, but rather just an observation. Texas (and other oil rich states) tend to be more conservative than average and have more oil workers (go figure!).

911h - we can forgive you this time but try and be a bit more organised next time and review the context of your script before submission.

Sorry, I just realized that my last post centered around "office personnel" - LOL! Big apologies. I would say the same for the people in the field, operations, maintenance, drilling, production, refining, etc. onshore & offshore. It would be a travesty to exclude the people who actually DO the work - I have been there- LOL!. Sorry 'bout that.

Actually I do not discuss politics much in the office, and mostly not at all, particular when I know if could alienate a person for no reason. I don't care which political view they take as long as they get the job done. Aside from that, I would imagine that the political mix of office personnel at Chevron is roughly the same as the rest of society. There are no more one than the other, and it would be approximately the same as whatever state you are working in, more than anything else. I have acknowledged the same amount of conservatives as liberals and also moderate types, which I consider myself, as anywhere else. And even a few libertarians. Now if you went into a housing project or section VIII housing neighborhood that would be different. But most work environments are basically the same mix as the general public of that state, + or-. For instance I wouldn't expect a Walmart staff to be any different political mix in workers, as the rest of the state, as much as every party would love to disclaim them.

8uyi, Most of the people at Chevron that I work with in the office are environmentally conscious liberals, not Trump supporters, but don't let facts get in the way of your false narrative. I'm not sure about IQ but most polls put STEM graduates in the higher IQ percentile, regardless of political inclination.

8dto may be on to something. After all, there are a lot of Trump supporters in the industry.
