They can only survive in industries with long life cycles. Look at car industry 25 year development cycles. They need huge government backing to make their companies work.

Indeed, Germans are not good when it comes to cheap consumer goods. They thrive when it comes to manufacture high quality, long lasting, pricey goods, crafted with care and respect for the customer. That is the reason why Infineon sold the actual ICDG back then - from german perspective mobile comm is a losing game. I'm sorry for those people caught now in the Intel soul-grinding machine, tortured by american-style management and being insulted by envious indians. They deserve better.
