Thread regarding Sears layoffs

More than just layoffs

I worked at Hoffman for a year and was part of the layoffs at the beginning of the year. It's come to my attention that there are more than just layoffs happening at SHC, especially corporate at Hoffman. There are a lot of upper management shifts, which is rarely ever good for a company. People brought in at the director level or above that are there to 'turn things around' in whichever dept are bailing after a very short time when they realize they won't be able to effectively push against the inertia of the behemoth that is SHC.

Additionally, I still know folks who work there - there have been more than the usual number of firings for reasons that are at best slim, and at worst carried out simply so they don't have to pay severance to people. Keep that in mind when there's rumors of layoffs and we don't see the numbers that we think should. It's likely that there are firings not included in the layoff numbers happening behind the scenes.

@1rpd This is what Sears doesnt seem to understand. Corporate thinks its best to pay minimum wage to save money, but the problem their is lack of motivation starting strong at times and just dies. Also veterans leave, employees that are very well experienced leaving. Instead they do dumb moves. Not saying everyone deserves a pay increase, but I would assume people that been with the company over an year and actually perform should get one loyalty to the company should count.

"I always think it could be 1978"

I can point out a big difference. I worked for Sears in 1978. It was BUSY.

And every department had a cashier (no CACs), and almost everyone was on at least a small commission.

The hardware guys and white goods guys (mostly guys in those days) knew their stuff and were paid well. The automotive guys, ditto. Auto center would be jam packed during bad weather for batteries and snow tires

But hey, it's cheaper to pay minimum wage for clerks who know nothing, and emphasize credit apps instead of product. What could have gone wrong?

Ozt, if there is a con here, it is you. History won't forget sears....it will be remembered in the worst way. If you "get" to work at sears, you need to " get" help...by the way, I been gone from shld for 2 years, still in daily contact with several friends there. You must not have any.

I agree with what people have to say, the company is failing because of the people. I have seen a lot of incompetent people being recruited at corporate for a while now.

@qje, nimble and quick? There's my laugh for the day. I always think it could be 1978 and my job would essentially be the same.

Interesting point about accelerated firings in addition to official layoffs. Many companies fire people to reduce staff.

I'm sick of people like the OP coming in here and telling us what a terrible place this is to work, that theres a secret plot blah blah. Its bad but its not that bad. They are fighting to preserve the company, of course their will be some casualties.

SHC is hardly a "behemoth" these days, we're getting nimble and quick. @ozt is right. Fake news.

OP sounds like another short seller coming on here to try to con us into getting demoralized and driving the price of SHLD down.

"I worked at HE for a year" "I've been gone a year but I know alllll these people...."

Good try, trying to get our employees to panic and start quitting or going in disgruntled. I'm not taking the bait. The company has been great to me. Every morning the one thing that keeps me going Is I know I GET to go to work at SHLD!

May history never forget the name, SEARS!!!!!
