I am looking for some relevant info about the culture and career growth in R&D vs (modem) design? Which one would you prefer, and why? Highly appreciate your opinion. Thanks.

THe goal in corp R&D is to make slick demos to scare the crap out of handset makers so they think, "WE EITHER BUY THOSE QCOM CHIPS FOR OUR NEXT HANDSET CYCLE OR WE ARE DEAD!! JUST DEAD !!!" Whatever you build in corp R&D will get thrown away, GUARANTEED. It's a soul-s---ing slow-death of your career and your heart. The only groups doing real work in R&D are the standards (LTE enhancements, etc.) groups - all other projects are dead-ends.
Heard from a VP, I kid you not ...
R&D has less of a sweat shop vibe.

All groups are good to join and will give you too much advancement and pleasure.

I am in agreement of the waiting. I very much anticipate to know the future if Qualcomm with the public financial reports today. Much uncertainty but also opportunity for very special exclusive knowledge skills
I would avoid until uncertainty of legal problems has passed. The economy is booming everywhere but here is cutting back. At a minimum should be neutral but something is not the good behind the scene.
