Thread regarding University of Phoenix layoffs

Financial Aid

Out of curiosity does anyone know how we all got certified for the maximum in financial aid loans and grants when UOP paid for most of my tution. $5250 per year. I still was able to collect about $10000 in financial aid take home. My girlfriend was able to collect more since she was also qualified for Pell grants. Im just curious how it works. Im in Admissions and just about everyone in my office has collected a ton of loan (some pell) eventhough tuition is covered. How does that work? Could we get in trouble for it later on? I dont want problems but since everyone at UOP does it so did we.

UOP is shady AF. I have $59k in loans thanks to them the trick is take one class and then get a leave of attendance due to "medical issues" and the Financial Aid keeps coming.

This is fraud no matter how you spell it out. More cash flow for the university or benefit for the employee. This is still cash sent from the govt. for an educational need... If you have an eff'ing "Tuition Waiver" full or partial... You don't request aid from the government. It's still fraud weather you have to pay it back or not.

I maxed out Financial Aid while being an employee at UOP. Income was over $50k and I walked away with $20500 in FA. UOP certified me for it.

You will not "get in trouble" for being an irresponsible borrower. Title IV funds are awarded based on federal guidelines and cost of attendance. Essentially, since UoP is so ridiculously over priced, most employees will qualify for additional loans. There are many current and former UoP employees who are at the aggregate limits for nearly useless degrees. There should have been systems in place to prevent employees from going so far into debt, but in their daily work dealing with morons who come to UoP already eyeballs deep in debt, it's hard to not play the game. The financial aid process is so fragmented at UoP, it is unlikely an employee would ever interact with a peer who could fully explain the pros and cons.

Bet you maxed out your financial aid while you worked at UOP. Everyone does. Its part of the benefits package. UOP will always certify you for the max. Stafford loans are 6% interest and you can defer any time. Credit card interest is 15% it would be stupid to pass up stafford and pay off credit cards. UOP will always get you the max in FA even if they are paying for all tuition.

Seems that UOPX once was a 'decent university, unfortunately, over the recent years, UOPX grew on the backs of US tax payers leaving Billions of $$ in bad debit and on the backs of those individuals that were given false promises of an education that neither cared about them or provided proper guidance. It was all about making money, it was not about education, students nor employees. Sure there are some 'do gooders' working there, but they seem to be more 'stuck' in that environment. These shadows loom large and those looking for new jobs after spending years working at UOPX are seeing the difficulty new employers have with hiring them. And those with UOPX degrees see themselves competing with grads of much better colleges.

And for this reason, and other fraudulent shananigans, is why their degrees are worthless. All manipulation, smoke and mirrors, etc. It is wrong, it is wrong, it is wrong. The government should have taken action again many other abuses long before it hurt so many students. Disgraceful.

They let you do this to pad the numbers. Some people I knew were getting full Pell even though there was free tuition. Complete thievery going on at that place.

How in the world does you taking financial aid that you don't need and thus don't pay for for tuition do anything for UoPX cash flow??

So UOP maxes employee financial aid....so? You gotta pay it back anyways so no harm done. Govt makes interest and school shows revenue win win! 😊

I started my business with my financial aid my girlfriend got a new car. When you attend any other school the school limits the amount of loan you get certified for. Additionally, we were told to GET financial aid by our managers because it would benefit the school with cash flow. We didnt do anything wrong that UOP didnt encourage or approve.

Federal financial aid rules. The University unfortunately isn't allowed to tell you how much loans you should take - that's up to you. Thanks for contributing to the debt the University gets blamed for and the 80-side of the 80/20 rule when you absolutely didn't need to. What'd you do, buy a new car with your student loan while going to school for free?

The only way to control excessive student loans is to allow people to discharge student loans in bankruptcy as was done in the past. This approach would force financial institutions to be more careful in assessing the borrower's ability to pay, which will involve assessing not just income, but personal data.

Back when UOP paid for all tuition 100% i still got certified for the max in loans and grants...so did ALOT of people in enrollment. From what I recall I can recall whole teams of people on financial aid while UOP was paying for all tuition. Isnt it based on your need or EFC? Glad I just left that $hithole

Because other aid doesn't reduce the amount of Stafford loans you can borrow. As the borrower, you are responsible for what you borrow.
