I hear a lot of Tommy bashing, but he got the maximum pay out for the company. $61.50 is way about the value of the company. If the deal doesn't go through the price falls back to the $30s. It shows he's getting a lot for a company that keeps missing earnings.

Another thing, the use of the word, "passionate," look up the definition of the word. It certainly has nothing to with retail sales or any other thing involving business. If it does, there is something seriously wrong with the mentality of the posters and management.

Well stated and factual the disintegration of the company's focus on innovation, customer service, passionate users and leadership within the outdoor industry along with the decimation of a team that understood what brought it to the table has been tough on Jim. The pending sale is not a victory, it is a sell out to ensure further failure does not completely wipe out the company's brand and legend. Anyone who looks upon the sale as a win is simply an investor looking for a cash out. The key learning - remember who you are as a brand, who your customer is and fight to employ passionate people. I appreciate when someone takes the time to research a post . this was a very good post. It isn't like the nut who said bass pro was going to fire every Cabela employee in Sidney and bring in 40 people from Missouri to run the Sidney . THIS WAS PROBABLY BY THE DUMBEST POST EVERY MADE.
There are several reasons why Cabelas went public.
By going public, it allowed the Cabela's family to be more liquid and free from the daily decisions - with shares, they could sell as they wanted to basically enjoy the fruits of their passion and labor
Secondly, it allowed for the availability of needed capitol to continue to grow the business and expand the retail locations. Most private companies with aggressive growth, run into a capitol issue that can have a negative impact on continued growth. By using invested money, this is not an issue although leadership basically answers to investors.
With all of the questionable moves Tommy and his big box team were making and the people tommywas throwing out - D--k did say that had they known what Tommy would have done, they would have never went public. One point in particular, the Sidney aquarium, a unique standard within the store and for additional stores, Tommy and his team decided to have the aquarium remove to gain the space for selling instead of just good will. Jim was furious and protested but was told, not your decision anymore.
The decisions that Tommy has implemented have provided the foundation for the sale beyond a simple wanting to sell. Fortunately the ship did not stay afloat until he was out the door. This time, the rat is caught in the hen house and his poor leadship is shining through in a broken ship that may not make the sale. If it does, unless it clears before the October date, the share price will be a lot less if Johnny is intent on owning the market long term. Tommy has created a ghost ship and his ineptitude is shown through loud and clear.

It never said they were against the merger.
They said if a "work force" wasn't left in SIdney they wouldn't vote for it.
They got the word a "presence in Sidney" and they then said OK to the merger.
I don't work for Cabela's but the poster is right. According to news reports and SEC documents Jim and Dennis were against selling the company in the beginning. Someone or money changed their mind to sell. whatever happens there was is nothing the town can do to stop it

D!:k and Jim wanted to make more money , that's why they went public. They knew going public would generate more money, Cabela's would lose the family feeling and it did. I know because I worked for Cabela's pre and post going public. The working atmosphere drastically changed after going public. I think it was all for show with Jim and Dennis attempting to dig in there heels asking the buyers (of Cabela's) to keep some sort of operations in Sidney. Again all for show as they knew whoever bought Cabela's can/could do whatever they wanted with Cabela's after the purchase.
Don't get me wrong, Cabela's family did do a lot of good for Sidney over the years. But this is business, plain and simple. Unfortunately Sidney will take it in the a$$ because the Cabela's family wanted more money. Defend d!:k and Jim all you want, but they knew this would happen, at some point, after going public.

Whoa big fella...simmer down. Let's be realistic, when talks of selling the company first surfaced both brothers were nearing 80 and the company was in decline. Their catalog business model had died and the brick and mortal experiment ran its course. They were not at the stage of life where re-inventing the wheel was an option, so rather than letting it slip into complete failure, it was time to get as much as possible, cash out and move on. You and I, and everyone else at that stage of life would have done the exact same thing.

There are a dozen big shareholders who own a majority of the stock. They wanted it sold. They voted YES.
The family didn't want to be shareholders they wanted out...and the voted YES.
