The capital restructuring is not the problem, it is the symptom. The reality is that Avaya has been losing installed based for over 10 years, first to Cisco and VOIP transitions, now to Microsoft, either as a transition, or more significantly as the future (60-70% of Aura/CM customers are committing to SfB for UC, and reducing their telephony investment to a sustenance level). This combination has caused a 6-7% revenue decline for 5 years (2013 to 2017 inclusive). The reality is that it is very difficult to compete with Cisco in VoIP due to their data net adjacency and with Msoft for UC due to their personal productivity software adjacency. The most valuable and best option for success is the Contact Center. Avaya needs a strategy to focus on areas that can win and not try to beat companies that are not competition on a level playing field. The concept of following the current strategy, the same one in place for the last 7 years, is insanity as defined by Einstein (repeating the same action and expecting a different outcome is insanity). The challenge is getting a board, management, CEO, etc. with the vision and persistence to pursue a strategy to Make Avaya Great Again.
While Avaya emerging from bankruptcy is great news, and there will be an immediate bump due to the pent-up upgrade demand from the bankrupt period, reducing the debt by a couple of billion does not change the underlying market dynamics.
Well I don't think that article paints a picture that is a complete success.
It looks like Avaya will exit protection still carrying a significant debt - that is going to weigh heavily on the company and restrict its ability to use revenue to fund development. The best sales staff in the world would be hard pressed to make significant sales of stalled products in what is really a shrinking market for corporate phone systems. And with so many developers gone or going, the remaining staff will be unable to make the significant improvements required to recapture sales.
I'm not even sure where the developers are these days - sites that used to be development hubs like Ottawa and San Jose have so few developers left that they don't really have the critical mass required to move a large project forward. Is the development all being done by employees in India and Romanian contractors? In theory that's a workable solution, but only if the Indian employees are experienced and motivated. My experience with them is that they had a high turnover and a bad corporate culture in their offices - their senior managers did not develop the kind of atmosphere that motivated people to do their best.
Maybe the best possible outcome would be for the company to finally sell off some portion so that it can concentrate on one segment and excel there.

You are right, things are going great and the future has never looked better!
Avaya will emerge as a public company with a heavy debt load, owned by shareholders that didn't want to own it because they only intended to be lenders. And they only got a small percentage of their investment back in the form of stock ownership so they're not going to be super happy.
With a new CEO that was part of the old team that sunk the company, many experienced employees either forced out or left on their own, no new products, and jittery customers evaluating their options, this is all great news! This is a clean slate to do something new without the baggage of the past.
I'll bet a corporate name change is announced before Christmas.
