Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Is Kmart in Oscoda Michigan closing?

They mailed postcards out about the blow out sale does that mean they are on the chopping block?

Oscoda has only one retailer-Kmart

That will really hurt that community

A friend of mine who lives there received the special postcard

Walmart is about 20 miles south

And Alpena is about 50 miles north

Praying for all the workers. Just so sad

I was the anonymous commenter that mentioned the June close date. It was supposed to happen before with that first wave of closures, but after meeting with management and the local Oscoda community, they felt the need to hold off. Everyone had to sign NDAs, but what do I care, what is Kmart going to do? Oscoda loves their Kmart! After all, it's one of the busiest and most profitable in the portfolio right now. Kmart is almost no more. Give it another year or so, but it has been great, Oscoda! Just be thankful you get to shop it for a few more months.

Yes, closing in December 2019.
Bummer...

Three Mid-Michigan Kmart stores will be closing their doors before the end of the year.
Public Relations Director Larry Costello with Sears Holding Corporation said the Midland, Oscoda, and Clio stores are planned to close by mid-December along with five other locations across the state.
“After careful review, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close the Kmart stores in Belleville, Hastings, Menominee, Midland, Clio, Grayling, Oscoda and Marine City, Michigan," Costello said in a statement.

The goods are expensive for a store that carries bottom of the line clothes, sporting and recreation equipment.

If they have any golf balls on the shelf they are 30 percent more expensive than d---s or even the pro shops in Greenbush and Harrisville. The bikes are good but also expensive.

I used to like the bargains but they are a thing of the past.

I truly hope they keep Kmart open. They have closed them everywhere else. Walmart is too far to travel for our family. There's already a lack of jobs here. This is the only dept store available to us. We kind of need it lol. We spend at least 150 a week at this store. For a family of 5. 😖

As a part-time resident of Oscoda, I have been frequenting the K-Mart store there for 20 years. I, personally, do not like Walmart, so I love the convenience and close proximity of K-Mart. I've always been able to get what I've gone there for. Yes, sometimes, the shelves are not overflowing, but selection is adequate. I don't know how the town can withstand another closure of this size. Maybe the current deal making going on will result in keeping the store open.

If you're not just making stuff up:

a) Why shouldn't the employees there know about it so they can plan ahead?

b) Why would you post on a public site frequently read by employees if you didn't want employees to know?

c) It wouldn't be surprising if all remaining Sears/Kmarts have closed by June too.

Hello,

I want to post this anonymously, but I know of somebody who works closely with Kmart and Sears and sadly, this Oscoda location is on the chopping block for Q1 2019, with the store officially closing on June 30, 2019.

PLEASE do not share with employees as they do not know about this yet. It will be during a meeting in Q1, so all employees do not know yet.

Oscoda is a tourist town. W/e, holidays, summers & hunting/fishing seasons bring people to the area. It is a beautiful town & the people who live here full time deserve somewhere close to shop. They have enough residents for 2 grocery stores so why not a retail store. The problem I see is that the KMart is more expensive & doesn’t carry a variety of stuff such as the Walmart in Tawas so people who can drive the 20 miles. It is also the closest retail store to the closest hospital. Frankly, I’d like to replace the KMart with a Walmart

SHC is out of cash. This is a way to keep the lights on a little while longer.

If Oscoda is truly such a small town that there is only one retailer in the entire town, then it can't generate much income for even the only retailer in town. They should be expecting the closure.

The company has completely run out of money. They do the blowout sales to make payroll.

No that doesnt mean anything. It will be run on Kmart.com too. It is just another approach of a sale for many if not all the stores I think.
