Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

It only goes downhill after the first severance package offer

With severance packages, the first offer is always the best offer. Companies don't sweeten the offer. Involuntary layoffs with reduced severance (unemployment and 1 week of severance for every year of service), is likely the next step in reducing costs. Now GE can pick and choose which "roles will be eliminated" and dump whomever they please. It's legalized discrimination. Good Luck to all.

This is an important point to take into consideration. I am yet to hear that somebody got a better offer once they refused their initial severance package. If I am wrong, please correct me, but from my experience, this is how they operate.

if you are still an employee that has vacation (LP band and below) they will pay (they are required by law ) your accrued vacation days out. If you are SP and above you are part of the PTO scam and since you no longer have any accrued vacation you won't be paid for any. The advice below that says if you think you're already gone take as much PTO as you can get away with is spot on. You aren't going to be paid for any vacation so you might as well take as much time off as you can before the general puts you on permanent vacation.

Word of advice: if you think you're going to be laid off in the next wave, don't be hesitant to use your permissive time now, while you still can. One you get the notice, use as much as you can get away with, also. Otherwise, leadership thanks you for giving it back for no compensation.

If you are on vacation "permissive time" you will not receive any vacation compensation which is why GE implemented this program last year before the layoffs began.

If you are laid off do you get paid for your vacation time you have earned?

unless you are an executive your severance offer will most likely be one week of pay per year of service. if you don't accept the severance offer they will probably just go ahead and terminate your employment and pay you 2 weeks pay. They have to get $1B cost out in 2017...they don't have time and are not motivated to haggle any deals. even low level execs will probably only be offered one week pay per year of service.

You mean you can take the severance without signing?

IF you take severance you have to give up your ability to ever sue the company and sign that if you say anything negative about ge to anyone outside your family they can come sue you. My lawyer advised me not to sign

Of course this is true. That's why I took the Digital package immediately.
