So much hype, late and underwhelming.
Lastly what a joke to be investing in expensive memory. Memory is a commodity and there is no such thing as high end high margin memeory. It will become a commodity as all memory does.
Only an idiot would invest here as a growth area, but why is that a surprise with a CEO form San Jose state?
Authtor here. @NyCuKcf-ido, of course I know it is on the market, and that the market name is Optane, but the Optane reviews just confirm that 6 months old article. It is marketed as an HDD cache for the consumer market and as an 375 GB some-kind-of SSD in the server space. The consumer reviews are shattering - many tests could not be completed because the optane ceases to work before test end, and when it does, it shows a marginal speed increase in certain scenarios, and only when used as a HDD cache. In an SSD scenario, Optane does not make any sense. In the server space, I could not find any honest, independent tests, only some mentions that it is far away from the proclaimed 1000x increase in speed/latency. So I wonder, will this technology get better or is just another slideware?

Even if yields and cost get favorable, this product category will never have the 50% margins that Intel is addicted to from PC days. The bigger the memory business gets the more it's a drag on corporate margins. At some point it will be sold or spun out. Another brilliant move, but this one started before the burger king took the throne.
It is branded as Optane and products are available in the market and selling super hot. That six month old article OP refers to is a proof how Intel has proven naysayers wrong!

Was it ever up to the mark? It's very fast but yield is too low hence cost is high
