I didn't get promoted this time. Our location hasn't had much work the past year, so I was surprised anyone got promoted. One guy on my team got promoted and all he does is update Makefiles and config files. It seems to me what matters more is how friendly you are with the manager is more important than actual work done. Visibility, no matter what that visibility involves, is important. The complexity of the work you do does not matter.

This is exactly what QCOM values now. Now you know the rule and good luck....
The company is run by wireless systems engineers. To them, makefiles are rocket science! Don't expect management to have ANY CLUE about what work is difficult and what work matters. You could prove that P=NP or find a linear time algorithm for sorting or triple the performance of the semaphores in Android and management would rate you a 3. You have been warned ...
Simply a BS process, bunch of lies, people with no degree getting a promotion, is simply a sh--ty company with a very weak very weak management from top to bottom
Who is this Corloene?
That's an insightful quote. I'm fully aware that the world is not run based on facts and what's right or wrong. When making a decision, the human element trumps everything else. I'm just surprised that considering how little work there has been in our site for the past year (and how potentially there could be even less work) that promotions still happened, especially to people who are not coding other adding lines/characters to Make/config/bash files but happen to be friendly with the managers.
I don't see how Qcom goes about business on a personel level is sustainable. Maybe NXP will save them. Or they could be two of the same and were meant to be a couple. I have some interviews coming, and my commute will go up bigly, but it's better than getting screwed here.
Welcome to the real world boy.
Don Corleone has a theory about this, it's very educational - it explains you how things work in real life:
DON CORLEONE
You never think to protect yourself
with real friends. You think it's
enough to be an American. All
right, the Police protects you,
there are Courts of Law, so you
don't need a friend like me.
But now you come to me and say Don
Corleone, you must give me justice.
What team?
You got it right. It's all about kissing asx and not the work you do.
