Every large company needs smart and determined leaders to make the changes necessary for the company to survive when the economic landscape changes permanently due to technological changes. An engineering approach is the best approach but requires data to form a plan and plot a course. It is common for companies to miss opportunities during a boom due to uncertainty and hesitant leadership. The same applies in overreacting and downturns. A true leader patiently watches as the economic environment changes and continues to adjust to meet those changes. For those on the outside it appears to be a slow, painful, and and unorganized process. Our current leadership was very fortunate that Conoco was so diverse and it's opportunities that they could pick and choose and still remain viable. We are not there yet but we are near. In today's world change is inevitable and will be continuous if a company and its employees want to succeed!
