Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

No value in the workforce?

Does the following sound like the oilfield you work in?

A recent KornFerry survey found that a majority of CEOs queried find more value in technology than in their employees. If this is the belief of many CEOs then how is an employee able to bring value to a company that employs them? Relationships with the client are one way. Technology is great until it becomes a problem. Then you need the relationships to have any hope of retaining the work. Will SLB be a technology only company or will there still be value brought about by hardworking, capable employees?

AI and automation will keep replacing workers at a faster rate, both in the field and office.

Let's not kid ourselves. For a lot of tools used offshore the service operator just needs to know how to turn it on and then turn it off. That's it. In between, the tool will do the business. In many instances the tool will turn itself on and off so operators become no more than cabbages but I mean that in the nicest possible way as I worked offshore myself.

If you have any doubt about whether SLB values tech over humans then you have been living under a rock for the last 5 years.
