Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

The expense of giving investors a case of the sads

Here's why M-Go and the marketing boneheads who came up with the catch phrase laden presentation are still floundering without a clue:

while it's true that kids have tablets and devices at a young age, THEY STILL PLAY WITH TOYS!! Just not Mattel toys. every holiday i see people posting images on social media of their kids pile of crap that they "had to have", but it hasn't been chock full of mattel product for ages because we went from the "must have" to "meh, it's overpriced and i'm getting more box than toy." They should have jumped on the digital bandwagon 6 years ago but content was too afraid to take the leap and gave a litany of excuses as to why it wasn't viable, so instead they came up with outdated technology crap interactive plush and a barbie that was easily hacked and should have been called "creeper barbie." then there was the overpriced "what could be future of toys" video that MZ spent waaaaaay too much money on to validate his uselessness and that did nothing. let's not forget the jonathan adler flop. we are out of touch and clueless, regardless of what m-go has in mind. her knowledge base is already setting up mattel for further disaster.

It's like thinking you found a folded $20 bill on the ground but it's just a cheap advertising ploy. The promise of and the eventual let down.

Couldn't agree with you more! M-Go just re-hashed the same "Focus on Core Brands" crap that we've always said. Here's the bottom line: Our stuff is over-priced because Finance has no other way to make up for the loss of margin from Barbie and other Fashion dolls. Mattel is solely structured on one category and when it declines the other businesses have to raise their prices and cut their marketing and PD money to prop up the company. It just makes us over-priced.

Hasbro has no such issue as their portfolio is balanced - there isn't one category that makes up such a disproportionate amount of the company's revenue and profit as fashion dolls does for Mattel. This provides balance and sustainability. Mattel can have all the digital content in the world, but if it doesn't fix it's portfolio it's not worth it.

P.S. - Barbie is NEVER going to be $2B again. Those days are long gone.
