Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

What will engineer a change?

The key question is: what will engineer a change?

I see no such catalyst until our competitors beat us at the software game. In some sense, that is already beginning. Some fast and nimble start-ups are already making inroads into areas where SLB just assumed they were the leaders.

Soon, a lot of the outward focused effort in SWT will be reduced to support internal services. The race to be the technology leader will be lost. Then the chickens will come home to roost. Re-training the managers, VPs, etc. just to throw buzzwords around is the exact opposite of leading by example. Totally demotivating for the rank and file workers and this wil show up in the products.

SLB are investing in the transformation not technology.

at the end of day, ALWAYS remember, you're a commodity. Look at Bill O'Reilly. raked in MILLIONS for FOX from his viewership. Replaced. Fox statement : he is replaceable. Ouch.

And what do you earn to be so loyal to a toxic culture?

Slb is not good for engineer career. They do have a good training program , but dont be fool by it. If u dont have any plan on how to advance up, get out quick or u will be treat l Iike slb engineer collection. You dont believe it , u can stay to see it for yourself. They like to hore new grad and post grad because they want to fill all the vacancies quick and cheap. There is alway somebody ready to stab your back at slb.

After working with Cameron, I more than feel secure in my position. But after working with SLB , not sure they have anything else to offer but a post-grad culture.

I hate to break it to you. SLB bought cameron for its core tech and more importantly to inflate our EPS during our biggest decline.

While ITT and SAP may seem like the center of everything at globalIT, it is the least of concerns for the executive management.

That said, slb IT needs all the help it can get for transforming all its legacy in house business applications.

There used to be a time when we were in the forefront of IT, Software, Electronics and Digital communication.. But that was in the 80s and 90s.

It seem like to me that SLB was way behind in 'engineering' and buying cameron was so they could get experienced engineers and SAP for organization. They are not behind with Cameron.

I dont know what the future will hold, but all these meetings we have for SLB keep saying that they want to spend time and money on innovation and disruptive technologies.

I really hope that means layoffs are finished so those of use left can start working on theories and ideas that may or may not lead to the next big thing.

It could take years for results to show so I hope SLB will invest in that.
