Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

Is it OK to be sub letting my company apartment?

I am an IM employee (Angolan) and living in Brazil and I sub let my company apartment to take advantage of the tourist demand for rental property and am taking in $8000 USD per month from airbnb on top of my salary. The company is paying $2000 per month to the owner on a 2 year rental contract.

I am living with my wife's mother right now who is Brazilian and have been looking through company policy and don't see anything that says i cant do this. I know several other employees who are doing this

Indeed perhaps the company may recognize the entrepreneurial flair i am showing and may even be good for my career prospects. Has anybody ever done this before or heard of anything similar?

You are simply providing full time security for the company-provided housing. Most employees are not that considerate of company assets.

Disgraceful. You are in Brazil to work for the company and are paid by the company to be there. You are not there to start up an illegal

business dude!

I have reported this to BRZ HR Director so you can expect an investigation very soon . Thanks for publishing and telling everybody.

Years ago the UAE seemed it was also a cesspit for hordes of the unwashed living a sort of superficial existence.

This is pretty basic. Back when I was in the UAE the housing coordinator was doing this though probably not profiting as much. He had access to all the IM and IC houses and had a couple packed full of smelly Pakis.

Why don't you get back on your banana boat and leave the realty business to people who know what they're doing.

Why don't you start a property management service for IM employees where they can make some extra money with you and you find them cheaper accommodation with home owners who have spare rooms? You could become a millionaire doing that before HR even finds out; - and when they do you could start another company offering cheap accomodation to SLB employees; - HR will love you for that.

Go, go buddy go.....

Did you get permission from the owner of the property? Most rental contracts prohibit subleasing and you are most likely in breach of that contract. In addition the damage to the property is much higher with tourist letting so you may be charged extra for that. I would suggest you keep some of your earnings for paying those costs

Deeply unethical behavior but you will probabaly get the promotion and enrich yourself as you go along at other people's expense

Well done! Your business creativity is to be praised even if it is questionable from an ethics perspective. Cheating your company is not very clever and is not schlumberger leadership behavior. Personally I would

lay you off at the first opportunity

Two big pillars of SLB culture right now...

  • Backstabbing

  • As long as I don't get laid off, it's ok!

That's the beauty of working in such a large bureaucratic company. If it is not expressly prohibited in any of the contracts you signed, then you are probably okay. The only risk is that you are the one that will end up paying any damages in the end - if there are any. No one in charge is wise enough to even suspect something like this in advance to exclude it from a contract.

My guess is that this was not written by the actual individual sub-letting his apartment, but is instead coming from a jealous person ratting another out. Is this is the new culture in SLB?You should just be happy with what you have and not try to ruin it for others.
