Thread regarding NetApp layoffs

The writing was on the wall 5 years ago

That's why I got out back then. As they approached critical mass with Indian "know-it-alls" drinking their own cool-aid, there was only 1 way for it to go. Technical model was unsustainable, impact of flash was ignored. Top guys were draining the company dry and the cash cow product was drying up. Stock price 7 years before that was about where it is today. When my beloved and respected director hit the bottle, I executed my escape plan.

A few years ago, ONTAP Engineering made 2 fatal mistakes. 1) NFS exports would now only be allowed at the volume level (they have since changed this, because they woke up) 2) Qtree SnapMirror would not be allowed on cDOT / you couldn't use it to get to cDOT even though it would have been very simple to flip a switch and allow it.

A few years and 14% decrease in market share. Interesting how some of the same folks who warned of this issue were impacted by the lay-offs and went to EMC, started EMC's competitive takeout program capitalizing on these introduced woes.

Regarding the response starting with "Fascinating to see"

This is the kind of incoherent babble you get when you ask for offshore help. Did you guys know that many companies are using the the phrase "US based workforce" in their advertising? Competing companies that haven't caught on should take note, else they too will have a large presence on websites like this.

Fascinating to see the somewhat anonymous opinions of those who have left from a MBTI perspective. You should examine it closely and take stock in the hierarchy and atmosphere. It may reveal more than you'd ever thought possible. They're "lun-aligning" form with function. It is a wealth of information and a big driver for business success these days. We are all experiments in many respects. Look at the failure of the "open" office and apply that philosophy.

Having left for greener pastures 18 months ago, It is intersting to compare the attitudes at the current place with the old. It seems that all organizations end up in the same difficult spot when the problems they solve and how they solve them are not so relevant to the business world.

'Creative destruction' is the best bad thing to happen in our industry. What I want to know is how to avoid the need to switch companies every 7-10 years.

What I do know is that good coworkers and friends are by far the most important, most treasured part of one's career. Technology and companies can come and go. I have found a group very much like the Netapp of the good old days and properly enjoy every moment of it.

And why are you on this website my friend?

Are you trying to figure out when you're going to get laid off or just trolling to find out when others who work there are going to meet their end with the once very popular great place to work company.
