Thread regarding Ricoh layoffs

Ricoh USA 2017 Layoffs

Ricoh USA will lay off over 1000 people, this was officially announced today. We have 26000 people working for Ricoh in the States. There will be more emphasis on software and the Cloud, so unless you have those skills you will be in trouble. Other companies in the industry are cutting jobs as well, check out the news section for Xerox layoffs that are happening all time.

So if you want to be safe from layoffs in the future make sure to (my 2 c):

  • Learn how to program

  • Learn cloud technology (there are no layoffs in the Cloud sector - at Ricoh or other cos)

  • Learn office politics, you will need mgmt to support you not to get laid off

  • Do more work than other, prove your value

I hope this helps.

Business was robust and going well when IKON was an independent dealer. Along comes Ricoh and everything went to Hell in a handbasket. Ricoh was the worst thing to ever happen to all the independent dealers.

Just found out workers in the Tustin, CA operations are getting furloughed. That means less product coming in to other distributions warehouses in the US. If they are getting slow, what will happen to other distribution employees? Furloughs, more layoffs, more closings? I would presume to say yes. Things are getting worse by the day. I would recommended finding a more stable job opportunity before it is too late.

Hi - I am a former RBS senior tech (26 years experience) from south Texas. The unfortunate writing was on the wall for Ricoh employee's years ago, so I spent time earning various IT certs and accumulated an ever wider array of technical skills and knowledge to improve my marketability. Finally made a calculated jump to a very large independent dealer near family in central Tn in early 2015: all the planning paid off - in spades. I'm working for a growing, vibrant and intelligently managed company that is well aware of (and has learned from) the many mistakes of Ikon/ RBS, etc.

At RBS, functioning within a continuously deteriorating environment induced a form of cognitive dissonance (slowly boiling the frogs) among many longtime employee's - which tends to desensitize one to the extent of dissatisfaction and frustration. After spending years trying to help improve our workplace expectations and environment... I finally faced the inevitable and gave up.

I am VERY thankful to have had the good sense to go proactive and get out when I could. My work environment now is FAR more constructive, pleasant and effective than it ever was at RBS - and I was a very productive and well regarded long-timer in excellent standing with customers, coworkers, management, etc. It is truly a blessing that I now have much more training, sensible expectations, more $$$ and recognition for excelling at my work to boot.

Advice to any Ricoh employees that happen to read this: as of now (8-2017), Ricoh is continuing a very quiet sell off of its branches, where in most cases you will either be liquidated - or rehired by your new employer for lower pay and/ or benefits. Identify a large independent dealer [NOW] with a solid, proven track record of excellence in dealings with both internal and external customers - then, GO! Soon now, there will be a flood of older, experienced service and support personnel looking for work elsewhere when they no longer have the choice - better to do it now, rather than competing 20 to 1 against every job opening - especially when most of the smaller independents want younger and/ or cheaper labor...

Also in the software and cloud side of things, and was recently laid off, after 40% sales improvement, so I disagree with OP on reasons. Many let go were top performers with age + benefits as the most common overlap

Performance had nothing to do with the layoffs. The large sales force reduction yesterday, June 6 was more of the same. There's basically no one left to support. Very sad. These reps were managing large customers. These accounts will leave Ricoh as soon as they can. No value left.

I'm a former Ricoh tech who saw this coming two years ago. I got out and went to a Ricoh dealer. I am now making $2K more than I was at Ricoh and I don't have to deal with CompTIA certs being held over my head as a threat to my employment. Get out now! There is still hope....

I've heard of customers who called for service on their machines only to be notified that Ricoh will not service any SMB customers anymore and won't honor their contract. They called their rep, who finally stopped ducking their calls, only to be told that he no longer works for Ricoh and that they're on their own.

Any top performers who survived at Ricoh will do well anywhere. If you're a mediocre Ricoh employee, you're probably screwed though - 'acceptable' performance at Ricoh will get you fired in most other places. Try and follow the OP's advice and learn to do something else.

Sorry, but those last 2 bullet points do not matter when the highest level of a corporation is determining the layoffs. This latest round of layoffs at Ricoh included management. Many of those laid off were high performers. It was all about consolidation and saving money. When the bean counters speak, the owners listen.

I was the top rep in my market. I sold %300 of my services quota, including several high end document management systems. I had AE in my title (not last year and the titles weren't based on production as I was #2 last year for the "senior" reps. I sold more than almost any MAE in my market, it was just new business. It was nothing to do with knowledge, purely a decision made by Japan
