How safe and stable is the San Jose (Atheros) group? I am considering an offer at San Jose branch. I am quiet interested in Wifi and the role sounds interesting. Trying to understand the risks etc...

QCA adds no value other than keep adding to the same WCN design for years, NXP will bring more ideas and new products including WIFI. Good bye QCA!!
If you want to be managed by inferior management, and told "what to do, exactly" by inferior engineering management, then take the job. You won't realize it for a while, and at that time you'll have determined if you are a good engineer or not. If you're good you then leave, since you'll understand bad management. If you're not a good engineer you'll stay and be paid.
QCA will not be shut down. NXP has no overlap with QCA, who's doing Wifi, connectivity stuff. NXP is only for auto diversify purpose.
@1hfe: really? Is Atheros going to be gone becoz of NXP deal? Source?
ATHEROS will be shutdown as soon NXP deal is done, I would say move to San Jose once you there find a better company and move.
Qualcomm is a great company . Sign up ASAP.
Being in bay area, not having "plenty other opportunities" is not a concern here.
I have an offer at Atheros. But I am looking for something for atleast 3-4 years. Interviewing, and looking for some thing under pressure is too irritating. Have to (re)consider work to home distance etc. Re-adjust and shuffle plans taking into account a new work is too painful. Hence asking about this Qualcomm center. If it is somewhat relatively stable and OK to join for now. Or is this just going to be dissolved soon due to new NXP merger etc....
I think having office in Bay area for Q has two kinds of practical reasons: serving Apple and historical one (acquired Atheros). It doesn't seem the Bay area office would be closed in short time. But anyway it is Bay area and you will have plenty of opportunities.
Oh common. Can someone please provide a more practical reasonable useful response. Please no venting.
But being in the bay area is not too risky these days...
Qualcomm used to be a stable company. Now Qualcomm and stability should not be used in the same sentence! Large lawsuits, slowdown in sale of Smart Phones, terrible management add up to "look elsewhere!"
