Thread regarding Wal-Mart Stores Inc. layoffs

No job is secure

Folks, lay offs will continue over the next 2-3 years till the HO headcount is optimized to pay for the $2bn store wage and e-comm investments. This will become a way of life, so get used to it. It's tough to lose your job in a place like Bentonville with very few options, but the severance is decent and can tide you through till you find something else. Good luck fellas !

Anytime the company lawyer say I was not vested and they were only ministering to my needs by giving me benefits. What the heck? How dumb can he be as a Fortune 500 company's lawyer. Of course they fired him and I could see why. But on the other hand he was only doing what he was told to do. It didnt work so they eliminated him. So what about you or I? You see all the dirt and schemes didnt just start. They are just giving it a new name, reor; to justify the processs of elimination.

Spreading rumors is never good. However, it is normal for people to have questions and. Try to come to terms with it. Certain events can shake people to the core., and they know underlying depression makes us all vulnerable

Trying to understand why is not being disrespectful but the opposite. People are in shock because he touched them i, even if only in small ways

If any of you feel getting on this site spreading rumors makes you a better human.... If nothing else, attempt to know facts and leave people and tragic acts surrounding them out of the conversation. This site and others like it can exist, but please attempt to be respectful. A family lost a loved one PERIOD.

can anyone confirm with certainly that the suicide victim was let go?

I never said it was. The way the post was written made it sound like someone lost their job at WM and then decided to end their life because of said loss of job. That was not the case. I merely wanted to point out that other life events had built up for this person and this was the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak.

I certainly don't want people looking at this site thinking WM is causing people to commit suicide over a loss of their job. Could It? Absolutely. But in extremely rare instances.

Most people learn to bounce back from job loss and divorce. Everyone has setbacks - a part of life

So neither is a complete answer

Very sad

The RIF (reduction in force) was not the only reason this associate took his life. There were other happenings that occurred over the past year that are not public knowledge. Unfortunately, things built up and they felt this was the only option. Please keep his family in your prayers.

That's so sad … wasn't aware that someone took their life from ISD … this was handled so poorly.

Plain and simple strategy people. the layoffs will continue because they don't hire hard or critical and they aren't managing the p and l by keeping spending and costs down. Simple math.

This isn't rocket science folks. They forgot what brought them to the table… serving rural customers that don't have access to the metro way of life nor do they want to. They are trying to mimic other companies and didn't phase in the wage increase($2.7B), nor did they phase in digital conversion as eCommerce is only 3% if sales so why would you fall in your sword for 3% and not preserve 97% of existing traffic and sales. They obviously have bought into either a McKinsey model or that of some other consulting firm. If this doesn't work they would have thrown out the baby with the bath water and all the new hires won't know come here from sick 'Em … so sad.

McMillon strategy is to combine ecommerce and physical stores into a single retail operations. In other words completely integrate the two in a seamless manner. Probably a wise strategy but too little too late. Amazon completely dominates the growth areas.

Walmart leadership after David Glass and Lee Scott is pretty pathetic and Doug McMillon is no match for Jeff Bezos

The entire ISD organization is in a state of dysfunction I never thought I'd see at any major corporation, let alone this one.

There is NOTHING productive going on in those buildings. KAT ground the entire enterprise to a screeching halt with a completely b--ched agile implementation and then hired on a bunch of millennials and know it alls who can't find their way out of a wet paper bag.

The outlook isn't good. I'm trying to get out before the whole damned ship sinks. And don't laugh, it CAN happen. Walmart isn't God, though it usually thinks it is.

So if Walmart.com falls further behind Amazon it's the store side of the business that will suffer?

I'm beginning to think that Doug doesn't really have a strategy and that beating Amazon has become an obsession that will damage the retail business. If layoffs, which have been happening twice a year for at least the last three years, continue then I think a lot of top talent will just leave as the economy picks up steam. The exodus will further damage the store operations by the shedding of HO staff.

Doug is signaling that a career at Walmart is no longer possible regardless of your performance. I know of several people who were top performers who were let go last week. People can't and won't work under the threat of imminent layoff month after month. I bought some property a while back with the intention of building a house but why take the risk now? Will this attitude become prevalent at the HO? What will it mean if it does?

Thankfully I survived the layoff but am still starting to look outside the company for my next opportunity.

Of course there will be a period of wide adjustments over the next few months. If the current alignments do not result in an uptick in revenue, profits, and market share, the next round will result in even heavier cuts.

The stock value has not really improved in a while and continues to lag

The earnings report in February, particularly results for the final quarter , which include the holiday season, will determine a lot. If WM falls further behind Amazon in ecommerce McMillon and Lore will not be in a good mood,

The layoffs will continue each Quarter. They have adopted the Amazon model, always chasing Amazon.
