Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

50% of my team has been given notice

I was given 2 weeks per year, plus "severance" based on title as others have said; my last day is May 23 (day after next RSU vesting - Thank you).

I've been at Qualcomm a long time and it was a great run . . . more than happy to leave, I was retiring soon anyway. Talking with the H1 Vista folks; it really s---s for them, their options are limited. I don't have the official count yet (I left early today), but looks like 50% of my team has been given notice. Based on a comment my director made, I suspect the intent is to eventually move the whole department to India.

I'm guessing the focus for the us all between now and "the end" is training folks there. India has their work cut out for them. What they are inheriting is huge and complex . . . it is going to be a nightmare to take over with limited support from San Diego . . . I wish them well.

No hard feelings Qualcomm, I loved working for you and loved what we created . . . I wish you well.

And a special thanks to Irwin Jacobs; Thank you so much, you made working FUN!

Understand the difference between H1B and outsourcing. The jobs are being outsourced. H1B hiring is not cheap. Outsourcing to cheaper destinations is bad evev for H1B's. So stop interpreting and read more to gain knowledge. Don't be ignorant if you want to make America great again

Before Trump administration they try to get as many as possible new H-1Bs.

Thanks for sharing this - I had no clue.

Can someone be more specific and note in what group this took place.

No names please.

A friend of mine got an offer last week from QC for Senior Engineer role. He is on H1B. This is confusing as hell. Why are they still making offers?

Actually I have a feeling OP and I are in the same department. And it was 50% of a large department consisting of almost a dozen teams of 10-20 people. They liquidated entire teams. E.g. 16 people laid off a team of 20 people. Classy response OP. This was a shocking turn of events today.

which team?

I was let go in Dec 2014 and have been periodically checking this board. I was not aware they were at it again, it looked like it was quiet and stable for a while.

Now, 50% is a lot but it may be a small, let's say 10 people team, so 5 folks is a lot for the team, but in the grand schema of things it's just a drop in the bucket for QC...

Anyhow, OP - I wish you all the best, it looks like you've been taken care of and I salute them for it (I cannot complain too)...

Good luck to all....
