Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

from CNBC

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Sources from Lowes told NBC Charlotte that they are making staffing changes at their headquarters in Mooresville. This was after rumors of layoffs had begun to spread on Tuesday morning.

“We are having staffing changes at our corporate headquarters in Mooresville,” Lowes representatives stated.

They later released the following statement:

"As we’ve said previously, Lowe’s is engaged in a comprehensive effort to refocus and prioritize resources to ensure we have the right organizational structure in place to support our omni-channel strategy and customers’ expectations.Today we announced the next phase of our effort, which is focused on creating a more agile and efficient operating structure for corporate-based positions that will enable us to be more responsive to customers’ evolving needs. As a result, the changes have resulted in the reduction of approximately 430 corporate office positions in Mooresville, about 70 support positions in Wilkesboro and approximately 25 corporate support positions in other facilities."

The news of these layoffs comes a month after Lowe's began implementing a new "store staffing model," which resulted in the reduction of their workforce.

A spokesperson for the Mooresville-based business said that the company was shifting some roles and responsibilities, and the vast majority of store associates would be given the opportunity for new roles within the company.

The new staffing model was said to result in the reduction of one to two assistant store managers per store.

Additionally, some leadership roles in the Customer Support and Distribution Centers were to be consolidated, impacting 37 employees nationwide and about 10-percent of vice presidents in the corporate office.

In total, the reduction impacts less than 1-percent of the Lowe's workforce, or roughly 2400 employees.

"It is always difficult to make decisions like these that affect our people, but sometimes they are necessary as we build for the future and meet the evolving needs of consumers," said Karen Cobb, manager of corporate public relations.

Cobb said that the company would be providing the affected employees with a transition package including severance pay, outplacement resources and other support.

I do feel sympathy for all those in Mooresville and Wilkesboro who were let go recently. Can we please get the word out that the store level restructure was on a bigger scale than Lowe's continues to claim? They allowed 13-15 department managers to apply into 6 available positions. 7-9 department managers per store were moved into a CSA5 role which has an expiration date of 12 months. If these "CSA5" associates do not apply into the store, they will be fired after 12 months. 7-9 employees at all 1,840 store locations across the U.S....we are talking about 13,000-16,000 store level employees. I understand that 500 at the corporate offices is hard to accept as well, but 15,000 people are losing their insurance, their benefits, and their livelihoods in 12 months time. LOWE'S, SHED SOME LIGHT ON HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN AFFECTED.

You are a fool to think that a corporation ever values employees over profits.

This doesn't surprise me.. This came after HD reported great earnings earlier that morning. They had 6% rise in stare traffic they beat estimates AND the biggest 2 things they have a 15 Billion stock buy back which is triple Lowe's and they increased Dividend almost 30%. Something tells me Lowe's won't be doing that. They only announced a 5 Billion buy back.. Can't compete when you are behind only trying to band aid

Lowe's Offers Corporate Workers Buyouts To Reduce Costs

By Joan E. Solsman Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Lowe's Cos. (LOW) said it is, for the first time, offering buyouts mostly to workers in its corporate offices as part of a larger cost-reduction strategy. It said the voluntary program is expected to "reduce the need for possible involuntary reductions" but added it could implement layoffs if further cost cuts are necessary to meet its business objectives. The move comes as the home-improvement retailer is broadly reining in costs and growth in some areas. In October, Lowe's said it would be closing 20 underperforming stores and would be pulling back on new-store growth going forward. Those store closures affected about 1,950 workers. The company's headcount is about 234,000. Lowe's didn't specify how many people were eligible for the buyout program, which offers a lump-sum severance payment and other benefits. However, it said the majority of eligible employees are in Lowe's corporate offices in Mooresville and Wilkesboro, N.C., along with some corporate positions in the field. The news was reported earlier by the Wilkes Journal Patriot. Shares were down 1.1% at $27.09 in recent trading. -By Joan E. Solsman, Dow Jones Newswires; 212-416-2291; joan.solsman@dowjones.com
