Don't be so indignant, a bonus is a bonus. you want to get more become a CEO or start your own company. you're working at a fortune 500 company where that is the prevailing system. how much do those wall st brokers fleece everyone on a daily basis. spare me your righteous indignation and trip to melodramaland. no one is asking you to stay. no one says you can't leave. you are owed a paycheck for your time at work. in case you don't remember you accepted the terms of your employment and the salary when you started. no room for belly aching at this point. jus sayin'

Thanks HR, for that politically correct and diffusing comment. Here's the bottom line: Mattel will have a revolt now because of "discretionary" bonuses. Not because they are discretionary, but because in an environment of no accountability from the exec team and bloated bonuses to leadership that simply cannot perform because they lack the skills and maturity to do so, everyone has had enough. Watch the final death throes of Mattel in the months to come. Selling off the brands is the only way now.

Not to minimize your outrage, which for the most of your post is correct but isn't the ratings that are made at year end reviews a discretionary way of distributing merits and bonuses?

Even in a hypothetical situation when 2 employees equally perform in every way and you were asked to choose one among them to give a bonus to you would have to use some form of "discretion" to make a choice. Because you know that no two people will ever be equally the same in every way for this situation to arise. It is a matter of discretion all the time on who is ranked 1st vs 2nd. Not sure you have a case there.

So as pissed as I am about this discretionary bonus I decided to do some research. As a hard and loyal worker to this pathetic place we work for - I urge all of you to consider a discrimination suit..It's out right BS that someone in the same department as me can receive a bonus all at the discretion of the same boss.. Please.. we all know there is already 1 lawsuit pending.. How about a company wide one next? Hey Hair weave.. care to share in the Booz? You're gonna need it. This is outright b---s---.. Complain to HR they say.. yea ok.. Just as dirty as the rest of them... I bust my balls all year and to find out my bonus is going to be based upon the amount of a-- kissing I do, because that's what its really about, is utter b---s---. FP Brands.. should be F U brands..

The edict from RG in HR was that no bonuses would be paid to anyone unless the company's target was met - no exceptions and no excuses. SO, faced with a mass exodus from it's employees who busted their butts to deliver, but were thwarted by the Exec Team who managed them and the business, Mattel bends over to at least give a little something to the minions.

But what I want to know, RG, is are you going to hold the Exec Team accountable for the business or let them skate like the company has always done in the past. You were supposed to be the tough guy that was cracking down on the loose management of the past, so what's it going to be - accountability or excuses?

They're not being paid today. They will come with performance review/merit increase cycle in March. And the company has $800m in cash. It's right on the balance sheet. Plenty of $ to pay dividend and bonus. Not saying there aren't plenty of problems here but cash isn't one of them.

I'm surprised there are any bonuses after Mattel missed its estimates by so much. Can't keep paying dividend and bonuses with that kind of continued performance. Only so much cash flow.
