Managers and HR, what was going through your mind during the final kick-out meeting?

I know many of you have been lurking on this web site. So, why don’t you come out and tell us your side of the story? How did you feel about watching your colleagues and team members whose careers were about to be destroyed in front of your eyes? Were you excited? Thrilled, maybe? Or, did you feel like your soul was s---ed out of your body, and ashamed about your job? Have you ever lost the ability to sleep at night thinking about them and their families, or you slept like a rock? Have you ever seen the people who got laid off by you and their last faces in your dreams? Have you ever been depressed, or always happy to be a minion of SLB? Have you ever thought about how to help them, or you don’t care as long as it doesn’t happen to you and your family?

So who makes the decision in North America to let a guy go 1 day before he gets his 20 in so you can screw them out of what they spent countless hours busting a*s for? I am guessing NAM means North America, what is it with this company and their stupid acronyms. Here is one for you, KMA!

Why don't you see if "QUEST" can help you figure that one out, because it sure is more useful than real employees to you clowns.

HR Rep here in NAM. I have conducted hundreds of releases. It s---s. It s---s the first time you do it. It s---s the 347th time you do it. It will continue s---ing OP, because you're kidding yourself if you really think there's ever a FINAL release meeting. It's soul-crushing to spend 2 SOLID YEARS RELEASING EMPLOYEES. It doean't matter if the employee is a great one or a crap one. It s---s being the Messenger, or Executioner for a decision that was made a lot higher up than my pay grade. It s---s to be the convenient verbal punching bag of employees who flip out. It s---s to half-heartedly crack jokes with employees I've been friends with or who knew it was coming b/c they turned down a transfer or job change. It s---s to see men cry. It s---s to see a socially awkward manager 5 years into their career try to hold one of these meetings with a guy 3 years from retirement. It s---s to see US citizens get canned while we're still recruiting from overseas. It s---s to have to give myself a pep talk DAILY in order to return to work. Reminding myself that I have a family to support, just like the peole I released do. So either s--- it up and go back to the big blue machine until I find another job, or just quit with nothing lined up. It s---s to start drinking in order to numb yourself from the realization of what your job has become. And it s---s to read snarky sarcastic BS posts from a--holes who paint HR as the bad guy. I have not made a single decision about who "should" be let go.... but I've had the dubious distinction of conveying someone else's decision hundreds of times since the end of 2014. So OP.... that's what goes through my mind every day. That and knowing that I should expect my job to be safe... b/c I have reason to believe that my job is safer than yours.

OP, I don't want to think that you have some feeling against all the HR and managers. I do, however, understand your pain and frustration (assuming that you had similar experience). After many years of service and good performance review, I got laid off this year. My final moment was in a small room with a HR (in her 20s) and my manager (in his 30s). My manager kiddo started it by saying "due to the recent market downturn... (I will leave the rest to your imagination)". There was no simple "thank you" or anything close to that nature, which I thought I deserved after many years of service to the company. The kid's final question was how many boxes I needed. That night, I threw away the old Schlumberger T-shirts that my wife and I used to wear at home. OP, I’m sure you can find many other good things in your life. Just don’t think about those idiots still making millions of dollars every year in this difficult time :)

Managers get laidoff also. I've seen it. HR gets laidoff. Seen that also.
