Thread regarding Cabela's Inc. layoffs

When I do apply for a new job, what do I tell interviewers who ask why I would leave Cabelas? Funny as it may sound, the public admires Cabelas.

What would you tell someone in a job interview if they asked why do you want to leave Cabelas? Let's assume you are not being laid off. Could you tell a white lie and say to the interviewer that due to the BP buy-out your job is being re-classified, down-sized, etc? How would they know it wasn't? It is not like they can extract that info from the human resource people or your reference(s) from Cabelas? I just want a smooth transition out of the company without a potential new employer seeing red flags about why I want to leave.

As someone who works as a recruiter for another company, if a candidate told me they were leaving because they were uncertain as to the future of their current employer, I wouldn't blink an eye, especially if the current situation with Cabela's and Bass Pro were explained...you're not sure your current position is going to continue to exist...this is through no fault of your own. It's a very legitimate reason to look for another job. Come to an interview prepared with knowledge regarding the financial stability of the company you are interviewing with. You can tell them it's one of the reasons you are interested in working for them. And I'm sure it goes without saying, don't badmouth the current executive team of Cabela's at anytime you are looking for a new position...not even on your social media accounts because companies look at your profiles.

Just tell the truth,

You want to get out before the indictments come down.

Be totally honest concentrate on what you have learned, accomplished and your passions. Cabelas use to have a lot of clout - no longer the case so concentrate on how you can make a difference. You are very wise to begin looking people know how bad it is concentrate on positive

Be honest and tell them the uncertainty of the future of the company concerns you.

You aren't lying, if you are honest with yourself. If you are worried about the future of your job or the company, that's an honest answer. I was with Cabela's for over 15 years, before leaving. I wasn't worried about my job, but my last job turned out not what I expected. I asked several times why I considered leaving a company that I had been with for so long. I was honest with my answer. I never once felt like I was lying or hiding anything. Good luck on whatever you decide.
