Huawei’s Hard-Charging Workplace Culture Drives Growth, Demands Sacrifice

The half-hour run had a whiff of military boot camp, and that was no accident. The new workers also studied an essay written by Ren Zhengfei, a former People’s Liberation Army engineer who founded Huawei in 1987 and remains its chief executive. In that essay, Mr. Ren laid out a bit of his management philosophy: “In victory, we raise glasses to celebrate together. In defeat, we risk our lives to rescue each other.”

The intensity of Huawei’s work culture stands out even among Chinese companies. During the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West African countries, Huawei’s Chinese workers stayed in affected regions as other international companies evacuated their staff. Those employees later were rewarded with special bonuses.

A year into their jobs, Chinese staff may sign a “dedicated employee agreement,” voluntarily forgoing paid vacation days and overtime. One Huawei engineer said he signed the agreement four years ago to start receiving shares as part of his compensation. The closely held firm says its shares are owned entirely by its executives and employees.
